It is often said that a poor workman blames his tools, and to an extent this statement is true, up to a point that is. Most often when someone blames their tools when something goes wrong it is because they do not have the right tools or fixings and fasteners for the job. When commencing any Do It Your (DIY) task then it is essential that you always have not only the right tools for the job but also the right screws, fixtures, glue etc required to complete the job.
The plain fact of it is that most DIY jobs go badly wrong due to not having either the right tools or fixings to carry out the task competently. Fitting the wrong depth or width of screws is one of the most common mistakes people make, with your newly built shelving or cupboard falling apart as a result. When it comes to using screws then never ?Make do? as it will end in disaster, so if you do not have the right screw for the job then leave it until another day when you have had chance to buy the right one.
If you use a screw that is too short it may not have enough ?Grab? in the wall and although holding initially it may pull clear of the wall when a load is placed upon it, such as books being put on a shelf. Using one that is too thin could result in the screw bending under load, and your shelf leaning at angle as a result.
Another example is that by using a screw that is too long, it could result in it not going far enough in to the rawlplug that you have put in the wall, this can result in you wondering why it will not go in properly.
So it?s very important to use the right screw for the right job, such s picking the right frame fixing to hold your TV mount on the wall so it doesn?t fall off, or using the right length self tapping screws to put a shelf up that?s going to hold heavy books above your bed, because you wouldn?t want to be awoken by those falling on your head!
Using the right glue on any DIY job is also vital as using the wrong adhesive, such as wood glue, to hold up something that really needs araldite as an example, will also result in disaster with the item falling apart if the glue is not the right one for the job.
Also always use the best tools you can for any DIY job, as using cheap tools can often result in more problems, with cheap spanners slipping and destroying the nut you are trying to undo. Likewise if you use the cheapest screws you can find then you may find that the heads strip leaving your screw half way in or out of the wall and unable to screw it in, or remove it. So the moral of the story is ensure that you have the right tools and fixings for the job in hand to avoid problems.
