United Mine Workers union says tentative contract agreement with BCOA offers $6 hourly raise

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) ? The United Mine Workers labor union says members would get a $6 an hour raise over the duration of a tentative 5 1/2-year contract with the Bituminous Coal Operators Association.

President Cecil Roberts says the increase would be the largest in the union's 121-year history. Miners would average about $30 an hour by 2016.

The Bituminous Coal Operators represents primarily the unionized subsidiaries of Canonsburg, Pa.-based Consol Energy. But the deal affects far more companies and thousands of miners.

Pension provisions cover every company involved with the union's 1974 retirement plan. That includes major coal producers such as St. Louis-based Patriot Coal, Abingdon, Va.-based Alpha Natural Resources and Walter Energy's mines in Alabama, among others.

More than 125 UMW locals are scheduled to vote on the deal Friday.
