Gene linked to increased pancreatic cancer

Published: Dec. 30, 2011 at 2:04 AM

BALTIMORE, Dec. 30 (UPI) -- Using next-generation sequencing, as well as whole genome and whole exome analyses, U.S. researchers identified gene mutations linked to pancreatic cancer.

Lead author Alison Klein -- associate professor of oncology at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins, and director of the National Familial Pancreas Tumor Registry -- said mutations in the ATM gene may increase the hereditary risk for pancreatic cancer.

"There was significant reason to believe this clustering was due to genetics, but we had not, to this point, been able to find the causative genes that explained the cluster of pancreatic cancer for a majority of these families," Klein said in a statement.

When these initial findings were examined in a large series for patients, ATM mutations were present in four of 166 subjects with pancreatic cancer, but were absent in 190 spousal control subsets, the study said.

Klein said knowledge of the presence of the ATM gene could lead to better screening for pancreatic cancer, the fourth-most common cause of cancer-related death.

The findings were published in the journal of the American Association for Cancer Research.

America becoming a nation of renters

Brian Keith is busier than ever as the architecture firm he works for rushes to wrap up work on a 300-unit apartment complex in Dallas.

The project is one of dozens the firm, JHP Architecture, has on its hands -- a surge of business driven by a rise in demand in the United States for rental properties.

The increased demand has forced JHP to expand, and it expects to keep hiring at least through the first quarter.

"We're seeing overall work come back and there's a backlog of contracts to go through," said Keith, director of urban design and planning at JHP. "There's strong interest in multi-family units and plenty of pent-up demand."

With U.S. unemployment at a lofty 8.6 percent, home foreclosures rising and property prices under pressure, more and more Americans have given up the dream of owning, opting instead to rent, a shift that is remaking the face of the U.S. housing industry.

The percentage of Americans who own their home dropped from a peak of 69.2 percent in late 2004 to a 13-year low of 65.9 percent in the second quarter. It edged up to 66.3 percent in the third quarter of this year.

On the flip side, the percentage of rental properties that are empty fell to 9.8 percent in the third quarter from 10.3 percent a year earlier.

In a recent report, Oliver Chang, an analyst at Morgan Stanley, dubbed 2012 "The Year of the Landlord."

"Rents are rising, vacancies are falling, household formations are growing and rental supply is limited," the Morgan Stanley report stated. "We believe the demand for rental properties will continue to grow."

Groundbreaking for new housing jumped 9.3 percent in November to the highest level in 19 months, fueling optimism that the battered housing market was regaining its footing.

The gains, however, were almost solely in multifamily housing. Groundbreaking for structures with five or more units shot up more than 30 percent from October to now stand at nearly double the year-ago level.

Prices reflect the shift in demand. Rental costs are up 2.4 percent over the last year, compared with an increase of just 0.6 percent in 2010.

Steve Blitz, senior economist at ITG Investment Research, says the lure of higher returns is spurring the development of apartment buildings. He argued the next "boom" in residential construction has already started.

"The reason rents were rising is that through the past 15 years there has been an under-building of rental properties because typical renters were increasingly able to garner cheap financing to buy a house," he wrote in a research note.

While the rise in demand is great news for builders and developers, it remains unclear what the pick-up in homebuilding will mean for the economy as a whole.

"Residential construction will be a plus to GDP in 2012, but house price declines will be a negative. So net, net housing will be neutral or a small drag on the economy," said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics.

At its peak at the end of 2005, homebuilding accounted for about 6.2 percent of overall economic activity. Now, it is only about 2.4 percent.

U.S. housing starts in April 2009 hit their lowest level on records dating to January 1959. While multifamily starts have given them a lift, 2011 may be the weakest year ever for construction of single-family homes.

"Business is slightly down from last year," said Bill Zach, a third-generation homebuilder. His family business, the Zach Building Co. in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin, area, is mainly focused on single-family units.

To Zach, that his firm is still in business when so many of his competitors have gone bust represents some success.

"It used to be my competition was every guy that owned a pick-up truck and called himself a builder. Hundreds of them," Zach said. "That's no longer the case, those guys are dropping by the wayside."

But there are signs of a turn and signals that the housing market may be close to finding a bottom.

The Architecture Billings Index, a gauge of future construction, picked up last month, breaking above the 50 level to signal growth in billings.

And the stock of homebuilders, as measured by a Dow Jones index, has shot up more than 30 percent since early October.

"Residential construction is finally beginning to rise from its post-recession lows," said Joseph Lavorgna, chief U.S. economist for Deutsche Bank. "The true test for starts and (building) permits, as well as most of the sales metrics, will come during the spring buying season."

Pets deserve happy holiday, too | Davis Enterprise

Mercer Clinic for the Pets of the Homeless is a volunteer group of UC Davis veterinary students who, together with volunteer local and UCD faculty veterinarians, offer a free clinic monthly to care for the pets of the homeless in Sacramento. The Mercer Clinic began in 1993 and is adjacent to the Sacramento Loaves and Fishes facility where food and care are provided for the homeless.

In 1995, the staff VOICE newsletter committee for the UCD Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital started the Mercer Clinic Holiday Pet Baskets tradition to brighten the holidays for these very special pets. Sadly, the need has grown significantly over the years and our goal every year is to make 130 baskets (80 for dogs and 50 for cats).

The program relies on donations from pet supply companies and from the public, to buy the pets gifts and treats. The baskets are distributed by the Mercer Clinic veterinary student volunteers to the pets of the homeless who attend the December Mercer Clinic. Donations are welcome and much needed all year-round, but this year the clinic has greater need for monetary donations than ever before.

Please help us continue this wonderful program and holiday pet basket tradition for these special pets who deserve a happy holiday, too. All donations for the Mercer Clinic or the Mercer Holiday Pet Baskets are tax-deductible.

To donate to the Holiday Pet Basket program, please make your check to UC Regents-Mercer Clinic Holiday Pet Baskets and mail to our new mailing address: UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, Office of the Dean, P.O. Box 1167, Davis CA, 95617-1167 Attn: Mercer Holiday Pet Baskets.

If you would like to make a donation to the Mercer Clinic for the ongoing clinic needs, please make your check to Mercer Vet Clinic and mail it to Mercer Vet Clinic for the Pets of the Homeless, P.O. Box 297, Davis, CA, 95617. If you have any questions, please call (530) 756-5165 or email emsamitz@ucdavis.edu.

How to fix the 5 most common photo mistakes

msnbc.com

By Steve Morgenstern, Techlicious.com

The automatic point-and-shoot systems in today?s digital cameras generally do an excellent job, but there are still many shooting situations where a little?manual control can make an enormous difference. During the holidays, here are some simple steps you can take to improve your pictures for the holidays or anytime that will work with both simple and sophisticated cameras.

1. Out of focus photos
When your main subject isn?t in the center of the image, the camera may decide to focus elsewhere. The fastest, easiest solution is to move the camera temporarily so your subject is in the center of the photo, press the shutter button halfway, and hold it.

As long as you keep the shutter button pressed halfway, the camera will maintain focus on your subject, even if you move the camera to recompose the shot. Alternatively, you may be able to turn on face detection (if it?s a person you?re shooting) and the system will find the people in the scene anywhere on the screen. And with an advanced camera you can adjust the focal point manually, but this can be time-consuming and result in missed shots.

2. Blurry images
Movement can cause image blur, whether it?s an athlete running down the field or your own?hands shaking slightly as you press the shutter button in dim lighting.?You can combat this by adjusting the camera?s ISO setting ? with a higher ISO, the shutter speed can be faster, making it easier to freeze the action.

There is a trade-off here when it comes to image quality, though. As you boost the ISO, the amount of noise, or visible graininess, in your photos increases. The degree to which this occurs differs from camera to camera, so a little trial and error is a good idea, but as a rule you can go to ISO 400 or even 800 with acceptable results, and often significantly higher if you?re planning to post rather than print your picture.

3. Off-color images
We don?t ordinarily notice changes in the color of light ? our brains make the adjustment automatically ? but in fact sunlight, incandescent bulb light, fluorescent light and so on are distinctly different shades. Your camera automatically adjusts to compensate for this, but it doesn?t always succeed. The most common problems are overly reddish-orange photos in rooms lit with standard household bulbs, and greenish shots under fluorescent light.

There are two approaches to tackling this problem. Nearly every camera lets you choose a white balance setting to match the environment ? sunny, cloudy, tungsten (incandescent bulbs), fluorescent, etc. Even better is taking a manual white balance reading, if your camera allows it. This sounds fancy, but it?s actually a fast operation ? you point the camera at a white piece of paper and press a button to take the setting. This provides the most accurate color reproduction possible, and you don?t have to take a new setting for each photo. Once you take a manual white balance reading, it will stay in effect until you change it.

4. Faces in outdoor shots are too dark
Your camera tries to ensure that everything in your photo will be reasonably well lit, using?an automatic exposure system. In some instances, though, this just doesn?t work. For example, when you?re shooting at a sunny beach or in a snowy setting, the background is much brighter than the people in your photo, so they can come out far too dark. One solution is to use your camera?s preset scene settings. These vary from camera to camera, but nearly all models include settings for Beach and Snow or Backlit situations.

Another option: Set your camera to fire off the flash with each shot. When left in automatic mode, the flash won?t fire when the overall lighting is bright, but in an outdoor scene it can help illuminate faces and freeze action even when the sun is shining. This is called a "fill flash.?

For finer lighting control, explore your exposure compensation options. Even cameras without extensive manual controls usually provide this option. Exposure compensation lets you tweak the camera?s automatic setting to match conditions as you see them. Setting a positive exposure compensation makes the photo brighter, while a negative setting darkens the image. Try experimenting in your spare time, when you?re not trying to take mission-critical photos at important events.

5. Cluttered backgrounds
Often we?re so busy looking at the subject of our photos that we don?t notice what?s going on in the background. Then, when we look at the actual picture, we see a ton of distracting detail that ruins the overall effect of the image.

Strategy one for dealing with this: Try repositioning your subject and/or yourself to frame a cleaner shot. Does that tree branch look like it?s coming out of your child?s ear? Move three inches to the right and it?s gone. Is the busy wallpaper pattern going to distract from your daughter?s lovely smile? Ask her to move a few feet away from the wall, allowing the background to fade into the background.

A more technological solution depends on your camera?s manual controls ? specifically, whether it offers "aperture-priority" mode. The camera?s aperture setting determines how much light?enters the camera and?impacts how much of the image is in focus ? what?s known as depth of field. A shallow depth of field means objects that fall within a narrower distance from the camera will be in focus, which can create a nice blurry background behind the subject of your photo. The automatic setting of most cameras, though, favors maximizing depth of field. If you can adjust the aperture manually ? lower numbers equal a shallower depth of field?? you can turn distracting backgrounds into fuzzy abstract patterns that make your subject in the foreground the focus of attention.

PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii (AP) ? A Marine who survived the attack on Pearl Harbor has returned to the USS Arizona ? divers placed the urn holding Frank Cabiness' cremated remains inside the battleship sunk by the Japanese 70 years ago.

"He said it was because that's where he belonged," the late Marine's son, Jerry Cabiness, said after Friday's solemn ceremony. "He lost all of his friends there and he wanted to be with them."

The divers swam over to the sunken battleship and placed the container inside.

Hawaii-based Marines from the 3rd Marine Regiment performed a rifle salute and taps Friday, some nine years after Cabiness died in Lewisville, Texas, at the age of 86.

Jerry Cabiness said his father always wanted to return to his ship, but his family took some time to fulfill that wish because of some financial problems and the expense of traveling to Hawaii.

"But we finally got it done. And it was a beautiful ceremony. The Marines did him proud," he said.

Dozens of Arizona crew members who lived through the Dec. 7, 1941, attack have chosen to have their ashes interred on the battleship after death. Many do it out of a desire to join those they left behind.

Survivors who served on the USS Utah ? the only other ship sunk in the attack that still sits in the harbor ? have done the same.

Servicemen who served on other ships and on land may have their ashes scattered in the harbor if they choose. Most of the dozen U.S. ships that sank or were beached 70 years ago were repaired and returned to service.

Altogether, 2,390 Americans were killed in the attack that brought the United States into World War II.

The Arizona lost 1,177 sailors and Marines ? more than any ship or unit. Most of those who died are still entombed on the vessel, which rests next to Ford Island where it sank nine minutes after being hit by a Japanese aerial bomb.

Cabiness, who was a private first class when Japanese planes bombed the Arizona on Dec. 7, 1941, was among the 337 crew members who survived.

Jerry Cabiness said his father was at his battle station in the main mast of the ship when the ship was hit. He narrowly avoided getting hit by machine gun fire, and luckily his only injury was from friction burns suffered when he slid down a ladder while rushing to abandon ship.

He said his father jumped into the water and wasn't blown from the deck, which had been reported earlier from a Marine news release.

The family proudly retains the only thing he managed to leave the ship with: a watch that stopped at 8:15, the moment that Sunday morning when he hit the water after jumping from the Arizona.

After the war, he worked for an oil pipeline company in Texas that later became Amoco Pipeline. He measured and documented oil that traveled through a pipeline to a refinery. He never missed a day of work in 30 years, Jerry Cabiness said.

He didn't mention the attack much.

"It was just too hard for him. He just couldn't do it," his son said.

The Cabinesses moved around a lot, but lived the longest in Levelland, Texas.

Today, Jerry Cabiness and his family live in Maumelle, Ark., a suburb of Little Rock.

'Nanoantennas' show promise in optical innovations

ScienceDaily (Dec. 22, 2011) ? Researchers have shown how arrays of tiny "plasmonic nanoantennas" are able to precisely manipulate light in new ways that could make possible a range of optical innovations such as more powerful microscopes, telecommunications and computers.

The researchers at Purdue University used the nanoantennas to abruptly change a property of light called its phase. Light is transmitted as waves analogous to waves of water, which have high and low points. The phase defines these high and low points of light.

"By abruptly changing the phase we can dramatically modify how light propagates, and that opens up the possibility of many potential applications,"said Vladimir Shalaev, scientific director of nanophotonics at Purdue's Birck Nanotechnology Center and a distinguished professor of electrical and computer engineering.

Findings are described in a paper to be published online on Dec. 22 in the journal Science.

The new work at Purdue extends findings by researchers led by Federico Capasso, the Robert L. Wallace Professor of Applied Physics and Vinton Hayes Senior Research Fellow in Electrical Engineering at the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. In that work, described in an October Science paper, Harvard researchers modified Snell's law, a long-held formula used to describe how light reflects and refracts, or bends, while passing from one material into another.

"What they pointed out was revolutionary," Shalaev said.

Until now, Snell's law has implied that when light passes from one material to another there are no abrupt phase changes along the interface between the materials. Harvard researchers, however, conducted experiments showing that the phase of light and the propagation direction can be changed dramatically by using new types of structures called metamaterials, which in this case were based on an array of antennas.

The Purdue researchers took the work a step further, creating arrays of nanoantennas and changing the phase and propagation direction of light over a broad range of near-infrared light. The paper was written by doctoral students Xingjie Ni and Naresh K. Emani, principal research scientist Alexander V. Kildishev, assistant professor Alexandra Boltasseva, and Shalaev.

The wavelength size manipulated by the antennas in the Purdue experiment ranges from 1 to 1.9 microns.

"The near infrared, specifically a wavelength of 1.5 microns, is essential for telecommunications," Shalaev said. "Information is transmitted across optical fibers using this wavelength, which makes this innovation potentially practical for advances in telecommunications."

The Harvard researchers predicted how to modify Snell's law and demonstrated the principle at one wavelength.

"We have extended the Harvard team's applications to the near infrared, which is important, and we also showed that it's not a single frequency effect, it's a very broadband effect," Shalaev said. "Having a broadband effect potentially offers a range of technological applications."

The innovation could bring technologies for steering and shaping laser beams for military and communications applications, nanocircuits for computers that use light to process information, and new types of powerful lenses for microscopes.

Critical to the advance is the ability to alter light so that it exhibits "anomalous" behavior: notably, it bends in ways not possible using conventional materials by radically altering its refraction, a process that occurs as electromagnetic waves, including light, bend when passing from one material into another.

Scientists measure this bending of radiation by its "index of refraction." Refraction causes the bent-stick-in-water effect, which occurs when a stick placed in a glass of water appears bent when viewed from the outside. Each material has its own refraction index, which describes how much light will bend in that particular material. All natural materials, such as glass, air and water, have positive refractive indices.

However, the nanoantenna arrays can cause light to bend in a wide range of angles including negative angles of refraction.

"Importantly, such dramatic deviation from the conventional Snell's law governing reflection and refraction occurs when light passes through structures that are actually much thinner than the width of the light's wavelengths, which is not possible using natural materials," Shalaev said. "Also, not only the bending effect, refraction, but also the reflection of light can be dramatically modified by the antenna arrays on the interface, as the experiments showed."

The nanoantennas are V-shaped structures made of gold and formed on top of a silicon layer. They are an example of metamaterials, which typically include so-called plasmonic structures that conduct clouds of electrons called plasmons. The antennas themselves have a width of 40 nanometers, or billionths of a meter, and researchers have demonstrated they are able to transmit light through an ultrathin "plasmonic nanoantenna layer" about 50 times smaller than the wavelength of light it is transmitting.

"This ultrathin layer of plasmonic nanoantennas makes the phase of light change strongly and abruptly, causing light to change its propagation direction, as required by the momentum conservation for light passing through the interface between materials," Shalaev said.

The work has been funded by the U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research and the National Science Foundation's Division of Materials Research.

Campolindo defense shines in loss to Washington Union in CIF Division III state football championship

By Ben Enos
Oakland Tribune

CARSON -- Many wondered how the Campolindo High football team would stop Washington Union-Fresno receiver Deontay Greenberry in Saturday's California Interscholastic Federation Division III state championship bowl game.

And, although the Cougars ultimately lost 21-16, the score wouldn't have been that close had Campolindo's defense not displayed a tremendous effort against the Notre Dame-bound wideout.

Dan Fadelli found himself matched up on Greenberry for most of the game and did a fantastic job in holding him to 57 yards on four catches. Greenberry, who is 6-foot-3 and 195 pounds, did catch an early touchdown pass to put the Panthers up first, hauling in a 26-yard jump ball that he plucked over the head of two defenders.

"That was an amazing play. I thought I had an interception," Campolindo safety Griffin Piatt said. "I should've knocked it away, but he made a great play."

After that, the Panthers had to find other ways to beat Campolindo than simply lofting the ball to their best player. Mason Windatt grabbed two interceptions for the Cougars.

"He's got size, he's got the hands, he's got everything," Piatt said. "We put Fadelli, our best man-to-man corner, on him, and I was kind of cheating to that side to get over the top and deflect some balls."

The strategy wasn't a surprise for Washington Union, but that didn't stop the Panthers from trying to get the ball down the field. Time after time, the ball went downfield,

and, more often than not, there were Cougars defensive backs waiting to knock it away.

"It's what we've seen all year," Panthers quarterback Chris Cain said. "They just did a better job of it than most teams would. They had athletes in the secondary. They're just a good football team."

Greenberry did set some significant records Saturday. The touchdown was his 33rd of the year, extending a record he set a few weeks back when he passed Monte Vista's Bryce McGovern's mark of 29 set in 2009. He also upped his state record for receiving yards in a season to 2,165.

The Campolindo defense as a whole performed well, allowing just 77 passing yards and forcing three turnovers. Vince Graziano had 11 tackles from his linebacker spot.

1 more year: USC QB Barkley coming back

(AP) ? Southern California quarterback Matt Barkley believed he was prepared to play in the NFL and the draft prognosticators agreed with him.

He had skillfully guided the program through two years of NCAA sanctions, put up big numbers to add his name to the list of great Trojans quarterbacks.

Barkley just wasn't ready to leave. He still had some unfinished business at USC.

Setting off a round of cheers at USC's Heritage Hall, Barkley announced Thursday that he's returning for his senior season, putting off the NFL for a chance to lead the Trojans from under the cloud of NCAA sanctions to a BCS bowl.

"I am staying so I can finish what I started," Barkley said.

At 6-foot-2, 220 pounds and with a game that matured over three years at Troy, Barkley was projected as a high first-round pick in the NFL draft, an enticement that had lured his predecessor, Mark Sanchez, after his junior season.

Instead of following Sanchez's footsteps, Barkley took the route of former USC quarterback Matt Leinart and Stanford's Andrew Luck.

Leinart returned to USC after winning the Heisman Trophy and a national championship, and led the Trojans to the 2005 BCS title game, where they lost to Texas. Luck came back this season after being the Heisman runner-up last year and took the Cardinal to the Fiesta Bowl while finishing second to Baylor's Robert Griffin III in this year's Heisman voting.

Like those two, Barkley felt as though he still had goals he wanted to accomplish after leading the Trojans to a 10-2 record and a No. 5 ranking in The Associated Press poll.

Barkley let USC coach Lane Kiffin know about his decision with a Christmas ornament that had a picture of the two together during this season's game against Colorado on one side and the words "One More Year" on the back. His announcement Thursday in front of about 200 people, including his family and Kiffin, set off a wave of applause and a quick burst from USC's band as a pair of cheerleaders danced along.

"That's not an easy decision," Kiffin said. "Not many people would do what Matt has done."

Barkley is the latest in a heralded lineup of USC quarterbacks that includes Carson Palmer, Leinart and Sanchez.

He had an uneven first season with the Trojans, making some questionable decisions that led to 14 interceptions. Still, Barkley threw for over 2,700 yards and 15 touchdowns to become the only freshman semifinalist for the Davey O'Brien Award as the nation's best quarterback.

Barkley developed into a mature leader by his sophomore season, again throwing for over 2,700 yards, with 26 TDs, a completion rate of 62 percent and 12 interceptions. He also handled questions about USC's sanctions with poise, never shying away from talking about the program's difficulties.

As a junior, he developed into one of the country's best quarterbacks, throwing for 3,528 yards and 39 touchdowns with only seven interceptions on a team that was one of the best in the country the last half of the season. The Trojans won seven of their final eight games, though they had to endure a second straight bowl-less season thanks to postseason sanctions that end next season.

USC left tackle Matt Kalil declared for the NFL draft last week, but on Wednesday safety T.J. McDonald said he was returning for his senior year. Now with Barkley, the Trojans are loaded and likely one of the front-runners to win next year's national title.

Barkley also will enter next season as the leading contender for the Heisman Trophy ? much the way Luck did when he made a similar decision after the 2010 season ? and can firm up his place as one of the best quarterbacks in the history of a program filled with great ones.

"I think looking at the team that we have there is that chance," Barkley said of playing in a BCS game next season. "We're on the rise and like I said in my (opening) statements, I feel like there is unfinished business."

Beyonce Pantsless For Jones Magazine (PHOTO)

We've grown accustomed to seeing her shine while sporting her growing bump of love like the ultimate maternal bling, but this new photo shoot reminds us that not too long ago, Beyonce was the queen of the pantsless divas.

Bey features on the cover of the Winter Arts & Entertainment issue of Jones Magazine, wearing a bit of fur and little else as she reclines against the terrace of the Maurice in Paris. It recalls her November noir video for "Dance For You," in which she was half Grammy-winner, half Philip Marlowe; as well as her October video for "Love on Top," which recalled New Edition's early dancing days in the 80s.

These days, as we said, the star actress and singer is rocking a more maternity-wear style, though she's still unafraid to go untraditional when it comes to bottoms.

Who inspired her style? “My three older sisters [Kourtney, Khloe and Kim Kardashian] inspire me the most. I pull [my style] from each of them.”

What is filming like on Keeping Up with the Kardashians? “I used to be really shy around the cameras when we started filming. But I think Kylie and I are both used to it now. It’s normal for us.”

Was she nervous for her runway debut? Yes. But: "Once I got out there, I felt more comfortable. When the lights are up, you can’t really see the audience, which made it a little better. I had a lot of fun. I want to do it again.”

(AP) ? Senate officials say negotiators are close to a deal for a two-month extension of Social Security payroll tax cuts and jobless benefits for the long-term unemployed. Both are due to expire at the end of the year.

The same package is also expected to require the Obama administration to make a speedy decision on the fate of a proposed oil pipeline from Canada to Texas that promises thousands of jobs.

If nailed down, the deal would come up for a vote in the Senate as soon as Saturday.

Majority Republican leaders in the House were not involved in the negotiations.

The developments came after the White House backed away from a veto threat that centered on the pipeline.

What's the Difference Between a Religion and a Cult?

No. Sociologists started using the word cult with some regularity in the 1970s, to distinguish emerging groups like the Jesus Movement, the Children of God, and Rev. Sun Myung Moon's Unification Church from more established religions, but academics were never able to settle on a clear definition. For many at the time, the essential feature of a cult was that its ideology and structure opposed those of the larger society in which it resided. Where mainstream society is rational, for example, cults are mystical. If most members of a society are individualists, cult members practice collectivism. Other scholars argued that cult members had to be in active conflict with other religions, or that cults always had charismatic leaders who were aggressively recruiting new members. No matter which definition you prefer, no one would ever have referred to the Latter-day Saints as a cult. It has millions of members; its ideology and organizational structure are similar to those of mainstream churches; and an average Mormon?s way of life isn?t radically different from that of any other American.

Dem targets Pelosi wealth (Politico)

Class warfare erupted in a House Democratic Caucus meeting Tuesday, as Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi?s personal fortune was thrown in her face by a junior colleague angry about a proposal to freeze the pay of members of Congress.

Rep. Laura Richardson attacked Pelosi for endorsing the GOP-written pay freeze during a Tuesday caucus discussion of a possible Democratic amendment to the payroll tax cut, according to several sources who were in the room at the time. Both women are California Democrats.

The sources disagreed on the exact wording of the unusually direct shot at the party leader, but Richardson?s sentiment was clear: Pelosi, who is worth at least $40 million, doesn?t need the money as much as some of her colleagues, and she should have consulted with them before deciding to protect the GOP-written pay freeze.

It was ?something like ?Well I am sorry, Madam Leader, but some of us are not in the financial situation you are in,?? said one source.

Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) jumped in to contend that members should be willing to take a pay freeze as part of a bill that is blocking raises for other federal civilian workers.

But sources said it was one of the most tense intra-party changes in recent memory.

?Pelosi was so pissed off,? said one senior Democratic aide. ?Richardson looked like a buffoon, like ?I need my money.??

According to at least one Democratic insider, Richardson eventually said that she would support the Democratic proposal.

Richardson?s office declined to comment at press time.

In point of fact, Richardson does need the money. She?s one of the poorest members of Congress, with debts that appear to outstrip her assets, according to her most recent financial disclosure form. Pelosi, by contrast, routinely ranks among the most wealthy lawmakers.

Richardson faces an Ethics Committee probe into allegations she and her top aides allegedly pressured other staffers to work on her reelection campaign or be fired. Staffers on the congressional payroll are prohibited from working on political campaigns while they are on the government clock.

In addition, under House ethics rules and federal law, government resources cannot be used for any campaign-related activities.

Richardson has denied any wrongdoing, but this probe, as well as an earlier Ethics Committee investigation into her personal finances and a foreclosed home, have cost her hundreds of thousands in legal fees. Richardson is currently carrying a personal debt of at least $150,000 to her defense attorneys, and her reelection campaign owes another $125,000-plus, according to recent reports.
