The Many Uses of Jojoba Oil

Although commonly referred to as a type of oil, what we actually extract from jojoba beans is a form of liquid wax. Jojoba oil, or jojoba wax ester, is the closest thing we have found in the natural world to the oil produced naturally by the skin. Why is this important? Well, when the skin senses dryness, it reacts by producing more sebum, the skin?s natural oil. Sometimes the skin can get it wrong and produce too much sebum which can lead to clogged pores and, as a result, acne. By applying jojoba oil directly to the skin, it is possible to trick the body into thinking it has already produced enough sebum. The jojoba oil not only halts the body?s over-active production of sebum, but cleanses and hydrates the skin, helping to clear up acne in no time.

As well as treating skin that?s prone to acne break outs, jojoba oil is extremely effective in the treatment of sensitive skin.

Although jojoba oil is non-greasy and absorbs easily into the skin, it doesn?t evaporate. This means jojoba-based moisturisers and body butters will continue to work on your skin all day, unlike many water-based moisturisers. Thanks to its soothing effect, jojoba oil can be used to treat common skin conditions such as dermatisis and rosacea. Improving the skin?s overall health and elasticity, jojoba oil has the ability to protect individual skin cells from moisture loss, healing and reinforcing the outer layer of the skin and minimising the appearance of pores.

A favourite ingredient in natural body butters and moisturisers, jojoba oil can also be used on the face, lips, nails and hair! Not many people know this, but it can even be used as a facial make-up remover. Just apply a few drop of jojoba oil to cotton wool and carefully remove the make up from your face.? Jojoba oil is also a natural alternative to lip balm. Rubbing a few drops onto your lips once a day will protect them from dryness and chapping. The skin around your fingernails can get extremely dry and sore, especially during harsh weather conditions. Again, rubbing a few drops of jojoba oil onto your nail cuticles every day will ensure your hands look soft and smooth. Finally, jojoba can be used to effectively treat dry hair and split ends. Simply rub a few drops of the oil into your fingers and run them through the lengths of your hair, or, alternatively, add a few drops to your regular conditioner.

Aside from all of these wonderful beauty benefits, jojoba oil has been used as a skin care treatment for centuries. It is thought that Native Americans were the first to use jojoba oil to treat damaged skin. Jojoba oil was traditionally used to help the skin to heal cuts, scratches, bruises and blemishes. It?s lubricating and hydrating qualities were also utilised to heal the skin following exposure to the sun. Jojoba oil is incredibly stable - it does not lose its natural antioxidants, or become corrupted or rancid even after long periods of storage. This naturally long ?shelf life? makes jojoba oil one of the most valuable and versatile natural skin care ingredients available.

Folk musician Doc Watson dies in NC hospital at 89

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) ? Doc Watson, the blind Grammy-award winning folk musician whose mountain-rooted sound was embraced by generations and whose lightning-fast style of flatpicking influenced guitarists around the world, died Tuesday at a North Carolina hospital, according to a hospital spokeswoman and his manager. He was 89.

Watson died at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, where he was hospitalized recently after falling at his home in Deep Gap, in the Blue Ridge Mountains. He underwent abdominal surgery while in the hospital and had been in critical condition for several days.

Arthel "Doc" Watson's mastery of flatpicking helped make the case for the guitar as a lead instrument in the 1950s and 1960s, when it was often considered a backup for the mandolin, fiddle or banjo. His fast playing could intimidate other musicians, even his own grandson, who performed with him.

Richard Watson said in a 2000 interview with The Associated Press that his grandfather's playing had a humbling effect on other musicians.

"Everybody that's picked with you says you intimidate them, and that includes some of the best," Richard Watson told him.

The ever-humble Doc Watson found it hard to believe.

Country and bluegrass singer Ricky Skaggs said Tuesday evening, "An old ancient warrior has gone home."

"He prepared all of us to carry this on," Skaggs added. "He knew he wouldn't last forever, He did his best to carry the old mountain sounds to this generation."

Doc Watson was born March 3, 1923 in Deep Gap, about 100 miles northwest of Charlotte. He lost his eyesight by the age of 1 when he developed an eye infection that was worsened by a congenital vascular disorder, according to a website for Merlefest, the annual musical gathering named for his late son Merle.

He came from a musical family ? his father was active in the church choir and played banjo and his mother sang secular and religious songs, according to a statement from Folklore Productions, his management company since 1964.

Doc Watson's father gave him a harmonica as a young child, and by 5 he was playing the banjo, according to the Merlefest website. He learned a few guitar chords while attending the North Carolina Morehead School for the Blind in Raleigh, and his father helped him buy a Stella guitar for $12.

"My real interest in music was the old 78 records and the sound of the music," Doc Watson is quoted as saying on the website. "I loved it and began to realize that one of the main sounds on those old records I loved was the guitar."

The wavy-haired Watson got his musical start in 1953, playing electric lead guitar in a country-and-western swing band. His road to fame began in 1960 when Ralph Rinzler, a musician who also managed Bill Monroe, discovered Watson in North Carolina. That led Watson to the Newport Folk Festival in 1963 and his first recording contract a year later. He went on to record 60 albums, and wowed fans ranging from 60s hippies to fans of traditional country and folk music.

According to the Encyclopedia of Country Music, Watson took his nickname at age 19 when someone couldn't pronounce his name and a girl in the audience shouted "Call him Doc!"

Seven of his albums won Grammy awards; his eighth Grammy was a lifetime achievement award in 2004. He also received the National Medal of the Arts from President Bill Clinton in 1997.

"There may not be a serious, committed baby boomer alive who didn't at some point in his or her youth try to spend a few minutes at least trying to learn to pick a guitar like Doc Watson," Clinton said at the time.

Folklore described Watson as "a powerful singer and a tremendously influential picker who virtually invented the art of playing mountain fiddle tunes on the flattop guitar."

Countless guitarists tried to emulate Watson's renditions of songs such as "Tennessee Stud," ''Shady Grove," and "Deep River Blues."

Doc Watson's son Merle began recording and touring with him in 1964. But Merle Watson died at age 36 in a 1985 tractor accident, sending his father into deep grief and making him consider retirement. Instead, he kept playing and started Merlefest, an annual musical event in Wilkesboro, N.C., that raises money for a community college there and celebrates "traditional plus" music.

"When Merle and I started out we called our music 'traditional plus,' meaning the traditional music of the Appalachian region plus whatever other styles we were in the mood to play," Doc Watson is quoted as saying on the festival's website. "Since the beginning, the people of the college and I have agreed that the music of MerleFest is 'traditional plus.'"

Doc Watson has said that when Merle died, he lost the best friend he would ever have.

He also relied on his wife, Rosa Lee, whom he married in 1947.

"She saw what little good there was in me, and there was little," Watson told the AP in 2000. "I'm awful glad she cared about me, and I'm awful glad she married me."

In a PBS NewsHour interview before a January appearance in Arlington, Va., Watson recalled his father teaching him how to play harmonica to a tune his parents had sung in church, as well as his first bus trip to New York City to perform in the early 1960s. He gave an early solo performance at Gerde's Folk City in Greenwich Village, a hot spot for the folk music revival, and later played Carnegie Hall.

Telling the stories in a folksy manner, he broke into a quiet laugh at various points. He said he still enjoyed touring.

"I love music and love a good audience and still have to make a living," Watson said. "Why would I quit?"

Musician Sam Bush, who has performed at every Merlefest, began touring with Doc and Merle Watson in 1974, occasionally substituting for Merle when he couldn't travel.

"I would sit next to Doc, and I would be influenced by his incredible timing and taste," Bush said after Watson's recent surgery. "He seems to always know what notes to play. They're always the perfect notes. He helped me learn the space between the notes (are) as valuable as the ones you play."

Bush said he was also intimidated when he began playing with the man he calls "the godfather of all flatpickers."

"But Doc puts you at ease about that kind of stuff," Bush said. "I never met a more generous kind of musician. He is more about the musical communication than showing off with hot licks."

His blindness didn't hold him back musically or at home.

Joe Newberry, a musician and spokesman for the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources, remembered once when his wife called the Watson home. Rosa Lee Watson said her husband was on the roof, replacing shingles. His daughter Nancy Watson said her father built the family's utility shed.

Guitarist Pete Huttlinger of Nashville, Tenn., said Doc Watson made every song his own, regardless of its age. 'He's one of those lucky guys," said Huttlinger, who studied Watson's methods when he first picked up a guitar. "When he plays something, he puts his stamp on it ? it's Doc Watson."

He changed folk music forever by adapting fiddle tunes to guitar at amazing tempos, Huttlinger said. "And people all over the place were trying to figure out how to do this," he said. "But Doc, he set the bar for everyone. He said, 'This is how it goes.' And people have been trying for years to match that.

"He took it (the guitar) out of the background and brought it upfront as a melody instrument. We're no longer at the back of the class. He gave the front to us."

Wayne Martin, executive director of the North Carolina Arts Council, said recently that Watson took southern Appalachian forms of music such as balladry, old-time string music and bluegrass, and made them accessible.

"He takes old music and puts his own creativity on it," Martin said. "It retained its core, yet it felt relevant to people today."

Said Bush: "I don't think anyone personifies what we call Americana more than Doc Watson."

North Carolina Gov. Beverly Perdue said in a statement Tuesday evening that Watson will be missed.

"Over his long and brilliant career, Doc Watson traveled the world playing the music he loved, but his heart never strayed far from his home in Deep Gap, N.C.," Perdue said. "Our state was fortunate to have such a worldwide ambassador of North Carolina's culture and heritage."

In 2011, a life-size statue of Watson was dedicated in Boone, N.C., at the spot where Watson had played decades earlier for tips to support his family, according to the Folklore statement. At Watson's request the inscription read, "Just One of the People."

Chinese activist's brother flees guarded village

(AP) ? The brother of Chinese activist Chen Guangcheng has fled his closely guarded village to seek legal advice Thursday in Beijing on how to protect his son from what their supporters call retaliation by local officials, an attorney said.

Chen sought protection of U.S. diplomats last month after escaping virtual house arrest in his hometown, sparking a standoff between Beijing and Washington and highlighting the extralegal measures taken by local Chinese officials to suppress dissent.

The two countries resolved the standoff by agreeing to let Chen and his immediate family travel to the U.S. so that he could attend a university, but his supporters say the legal activist's extended family in Shandong province faces a continued crackdown.

His nephew, Chen Kegui, has been arrested and accused of attempted murder during a clash last month with local officials who burst into his home looking for Chen after his escape.

Chen Guangfu ? the activist's brother and the father of Chen Kegui ? met Thursday in Beijing with attorney Ding Xikui to discuss his son's case, the lawyer said.

Ding says he and another attorney were authorized by Chen Kegui's wife to defend him. However, police at the Yinan detention center where Chen Kegui is being have told the lawyers that government-appointed attorneys will be representing him instead.

Ding said Chen Guangfu wanted to meet with him to affirm that he, too, wanted Ding to represent his son, not the government-appointed lawyers.

"We are still in negotiations with the local authorities" on Chen Kegui's case, Ding said, adding that Chen Guangfu also wanted to meet his daughter-in-law who is staying in Beijing.

Two other rights lawyers said that Chen Guangfu called them once he left the village. One of them, Jiang Tianyong, said Chen Guangfu described the security situation in his hometown as having become tighter since Chen Guangcheng escaped the village a month ago.

"There are more people, many more people. They are stationed at the entrance of the village and at major intersections, they are spread even farther and wider," Jiang said.

Chen Guangcheng is a self-taught legal activist who gained recognition for crusading for the disabled and fighting against forced abortions in his rural community. But he angered local officials and was convicted in 2006 on what his supporters say were fabricated charges. After serving four years in prison, he then faced an abusive and illegal house arrest.

Chen made a daring escape from his village in April and wound up in the protection of U.S. diplomats, triggering a diplomatic standoff over his fate. Officials struck a deal that let Chen walk free, only to see him have second thoughts. That forced new negotiations that led to an agreement to send him to the U.S. to study law, a goal of his, at New York University.

The departure of Chen, his wife and two children to the United States on Saturday marked the conclusion of nearly a month of uncertainty and years of mistreatment by local authorities for the activist.

Easy Ways to Start Scrapbooking ~ * THE COUNTRY CHIC ...

Before I started scrapbooking, I thought it was a hobby that required serious dedication and the purchase of a lot of stuff to even try. I had a specific notion in my head that these scrapbookers were a serious bunch and to jump in you had to go all-in.
Times have changed and modern memory keeping looks a lot different than moms packing crop rooms on Friday nights. Scrapbooking now offers options for any design style, stage of life and budget. The
scrapbooker of today probably looks a lot different than you might imagine and it is easier than ever to get started.

Four Ways to Try Scrapbooking

At its heart, scrapbooking is about adding words and, in some cases decoration, to your photos. It can be as simple as that or quite a bit more. These strategies can help you get your feet wet and see if the scrapbooking of today works for you.

1. Share Photos Online - Scrapbooking is a way to share more of your life with friends and family. The easiest way to get started sharing the photos you take is with Facebook or other online services like Flickr? or Instagram. You can even adjust privacy settings to control who can see your images.

2. Start a Journal - Documenting your stories with words no longer requires pencil and paper. You can use services like OhLife to prompt you with an email or capture your daily thoughts with apps like Momento.
If you still crave the touch and feel of a real journal, try a Memory Logbook, which is a journal for
scrapbookers.

3. Create a Photo Book - The most straight forward method for combining words and decoration with your photos is a photo book. These are hard- or soft-bound books where you can upload your photos and drag-and-drop them on pre-made pages. One of the most popular services for easily creating photo books is Shutterfly, but many of your major stores like Walmart will even let you create photo books too.

4. Utilize Shortcuts - Many scrapbook or craft stores carry page kits that just require your photos and acid-free adhesive. Purchasing page kits can minimize the up-front investment since everything is cut for you. For the latest on-trend products and help coordinating products, you can order kits online from clubs like Studio Calico or Cocoa Daisy. These supplies, however, will also require a paper trimmer.

Scrapbookers today, especially those who are involved online, embrace a wide variety of techniques to capture their most important stories.? Whether you decide to create embellished pages or simply share your photos on the Internet, to a modern memory keeper it all counts!

Jennifer S. Wilson is a scrapbooker, writer and creative entrepreneur living in the heart of the midwest with a husband, two stepkids and a sweet baby girl. She is passionate about helping people find more time for creativity, especially documenting life's stories through words and photos. You can get more practical ideas for scrapbooking at Simple Scrapper.

NEW YORK (AP) ? A man who dressed up as his mother in a bizarre real estate fraud that involved doctoring her death certificate and cashing her Social Security checks for six years after she died was sentenced Monday to more than 13 years behind bars.

Thomas Parkin was convicted May 3 on charges including grand larceny and mortgage fraud. He was sentenced Monday to 13 2/3 to 41 years in prison. Prosecutors said the scheme lasted six years and involved Parkin wearing a blond wig, dress and oversized sunglasses.

The 51-year-old Parkin said at sentencing that he never hurt anyone or used stolen funds for personal gain or injury.

When his mother, Irene Prusik, died in 2003 at age 73, he began impersonating her to cash her Social Security checks and keep her $2.2 million brownstone in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Park Slope, prosecutors said. The house had been deeded to Thomas Parkin, but he couldn't make mortgage payments and the house was later sold at a foreclosure auction, prosecutors said.

Parkin and a co-defendant later sued the new owner under Prusik's name, claiming real estate fraud and saying the auction was invalid in part because she was still alive, prosecutors said.

To maintain the ruse, Parkin doctored his mother's death certificate and went to the Department of Motor Vehicles dressed as her in a blond wig, dress and oversized sunglasses so he could get a renewed license, prosecutors said. He also cashed Social Security checks for six years, totaling about $44,000, they said.

Jurors deliberated for less than a day before finding him guilty. At trial, they were shown security footage of Parkin in drag in public, but his defense attorney said it could've been anyone.

As the property dispute dragged out, both sides eventually contacted the district attorney to accuse each other of fraud. By the time investigators arranged a meeting with the family, they had proof Prusik was dead: a photo of her tombstone in a local cemetery.

The investigators played along as Parkin showed up for the interview "wearing a red cardigan, lipstick, manicured nails and breathing through an oxygen tank," prosecutors said.

A co-defendant, Mhilton Rimolo, 49, was sentenced in October 2010 to three years in prison after he was convicted of grand larceny.

Putin tightens grip with new government

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin unveiled a government dominated by loyalists on Monday, tightening his grip on the economy and national security after protests and limiting Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev's ability to pursue market reforms.

Putin, 59, opted for continuity by retaining his ally Igor Shuvalov as first deputy prime minister in charge of economic policy, while Igor Sechin will remain his energy chief in a role outside the government.

Putin reeled off several new names in announcing the cabinet appointments at a Kremlin meeting but kept a core of familiar figures in place, displaying no great hunger for policy changes at the start of a six-year presidential term.

The former KGB spy consolidated his hold over the "power" ministries by naming Moscow police chief Vladimir Kolokoltsev as interior minister, in a sign of trust in a man who has at times used heavy force against protesters demanding Putin quit.

Putin signaled continuity in international and military affairs, leaving Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov in place along with Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, an ally who oversees the defense industry.

"Work will be difficult, given the concrete situation in the world economy - there are very many factors of uncertainty," Putin told the new cabinet, seated at the head of the table with Medvedev to his right, in a Kremlin meeting broadcast live on state television.

An important test of the government will be the speed at which it implements a privatization program and a drive to reduce the dependence of the $1.7 trillion economy on oil and gas exports.

Putin has also faced the biggest protests since he was first elected president in 2000, caused initially by allegations of electoral fraud but fuelled by anger and frustration that his 12-year domination of Russia has been extended by six years.

The opposition, representing a civil society that is finally emerging more than two decades after the collapse of the Soviet Union, says its views are being ignored and Putin is stifling economic and political reforms in the world's largest country.

His appointment of Kolokoltsev to the Interior Ministry sent a clear message that he does not intend to bow to the protesters' demands for more political choice and a reduction in the strong central control over a country sprawling from the Baltic Sea to the Pacific Ocean.

"This is a man who breaks up peaceful meetings with the help of cudgels," opposition leader Boris Nemtsov told Reuters. "This all fits into the logic of modern Putinism."

GROWTH AGENDA

Medvedev, 46, named premier after Putin returned to the Kremlin on May 7, has said he will push pro-growth policies and the privatization drive.

But, even though the partners in Russia's ruling 'tandem' announced they had agreed to switch jobs last September, the long and secretive process of forming a government raised concerns of factional divisions between the two camps.

"The composition of the new cabinet suggests that it is likely to focus on budget stability rather than a pro-market agenda," Moscow-based Alfa Bank said in a research note.

"We also view the new cabinet as reflective of efforts to maintain a balance of power between the president and PM, which may make it difficult to deliver a united economic agenda."

The line-up brought in a couple of new faces from the team of young market liberals that served in the Kremlin during Medvedev's four-year term as president, during which he promised far-reaching reforms but carried out few of them.

One, Arkady Dvorkovich, was named among six deputy premiers and was expected to have responsibility for energy and industry policy - areas over which he had little influence while serving as Medvedev's economic adviser.

The energy minister's job went to Alexander Novak, a former deputy finance minister, indicating that Sechin would maintain control over Russia's strategic oil and gas sector despite leaving the government.

Another Medvedev aide, former power industry boss Mikhail Abyzov, missed out on an energy role and was named last on Putin's list as coordinator of an "open government" forum backed by Medvedev that has until now produced talk but little action.

Putin, who stepped aside as president in 2008 because of constitutional limits, extended his influence over economic policy - traditionally the preserve of the prime minister - by ensuring that the finance and economy portfolios were taken by placemen who support his credo of state-led development.

Career bureaucrat Anton Siluanov stays as finance minister, while a pro-Putin economist, Andrei Belousov, was promoted to economy minister.

NO BREAKTHROUGH

"This is not a breakthrough government," said former Finance Minister Alexei Kudrin, a fiscal hawk ousted from government last year in a power struggle with Medvedev. He is still close to Putin and has been named as a possible future prime minister.

"I doubt greatly that it will be able to rise to the challenges facing Russia."

Analysts said the cabinet would probably lack independence. They looked to the Kremlin team being formed by Putin for clues on the direction of policy during his six-year term, after which he could seek re-election and try to rule until 2024.

"The balance of power in the decision-making process is likely to shift from the government to the presidential administration, while recent presidential statements have not revealed increased appetite for structural reforms," Alexander Morozov, chief economist at HSBC in Moscow, said in a note.

Although latest figures show Russia's economy grew 4.9 percent in the first quarter, that was boosted by lavish pre-election spending that drove up the level at which the oil price needs to be for Russia to balance its budget in future.

"The oil curse will get us sooner or later," said German Gref, head of Russia's largest bank, Sberbank. "The government has no option but to create a favorable climate for investment and growth."

Gref's bank is at the top of a list of state assets slated for privatization, but the sale of a 7.6 percent stake planned for last September has been repeatedly delayed.

Shuvalov recently vetoed a near-term sale due to poor market conditions that have since deteriorated further, reducing the value of the stake to $4.3 billion.

The English-speaking lawyer is seen as one of the few officials who can mediate in the battles for power and influence between the market liberals and those, like Putin, with a background in the security services.

"Shuvalov ... has been a proponent of privatization in the past," said Peter Westin, chief economist at Moscow brokerage Aton. "Whether it goes ahead and at what speed ... depends on the oil price."

Understanding Cabinet Refacing Costs - IdeaMarketers.com

One way to avoid the exorbitant expense of completely replacing the cabinets in a kitchen is by refacing them instead. There are several different cabinet refacing options, though, and some are more affordable than others. Before making a decision, a homeowner should be aware of the kinds of cabinet refacing costs that he or she will face. It is generally easy to find a budget-friendly solution, but the best way to do so is by understanding the various expenses ahead of time.

New Hardware

The most affordable way to breathe new life into cabinets is by replacing their hardware. New knobs, hinges and handles are relatively inexpensive. There are many ornate and unique-looking options out there, and the right thing can really spruce up the appearance of a cabinet. In general, a new knob will cost between two and five dollars. A new handle will cost between five and 10 dollars. Every knob or handle should be replaced to achieve a consistent look. This job is easy to complete, and it doesn't take a lot of time either.

Veneers

Veneers are popular cabinet refacing options, and they are available in a dizzying array of colors, styles and designs. A wide range of prices is available too, so it's fairly easy to find something that works well with any given budget. On the low end of the price scale, it's possible to find veneers that cost around 15 dollars each. On the pricier end of the scale, veneers can cost as much as 65 or 70 dollars apiece. Whatever a homeowner's budget may be, he or she should be able to find the right veneers without a lot of trouble.

Repainting Cabinets

Another option is to repaint existing cabinet doors and drawer fronts. This process is a little more involved because doors and drawer fronts should be removed before they are painted and replaced after they are completely dry. In addition to paint, sandpaper, brushes, tape, screwdrivers and other tools will be needed. On average, repainting a set of cabinets will cost anywhere from $150 to $250. The specific amount will depend on how many tools a homeowner already has.

Replacing Doors and Drawer Fronts

Completely replacing the doors and drawer fronts is among the most expensive options. However, it is also one of the easiest strategies. The average price of a new drawer front or cabinet door is right around $50. There are cheaper options, and there are much more expensive ones as well. In addition to style, homeowners should keep quality in mind. Without being careful, it is easy to end up with inferior pieces that can't withstand everyday use.

Tax and College Finance Reform ? Aid ghd australia or Hindrance ...

Securing enough funding for that Dallas colleges is a ghd hair straightener issue experienced by a lot of college districts inside the United states. Condition funding continues to be scarce, demanding Dallas colleges to rely upon nearby property and school taxes to cover the common demands with the colleges. Additionally, federal authorities oversight creates much more administrative specifications. This implies that many in the valuable bucks the Dallas schools get by means of govt funding must be expended on administrative costs, rather than straight to benefit the college students.

Here is how the new a href=?http://www.ghdscheapstraightener-au.org?ghd/a laws impacts the Dallas schools.

School Residence Tax Control. The Dallas schools will now be required to location in depth neighborhood college ghd australia spending information on an internet web-site for any individual to review. This new level of heavy oversight gives ammunition to anyone who needs to acquire their name within the paper by means of official criticism to the legislators or even bogus court action. Some question irrespective of whether this may well result in far more expenses to the Dallas colleges to defend required expenditures that benefit Dallas schools students, either directly or indirectly.

RIM demos simple app switching in BlackBerry 10, slide to reveal

RIM demos simple app switching

BlackBerry 10 is no joke on the multitasking front. The QNX-based OS may be a long time coming, but it really is offering something for the modern user that needs to switch between several apps. Instead of going the task list route, as webOS and Android have done, RIM's latest simply lets you swipe to reveal background tasks. Drag your thumb from left to right to peek at other apps that are currently running in the background. You can simply glance at them and go back to the foreground, or you can actually swipe back to go to programs launched earlier. It's slick, intuitive and perhaps the most familiar multitasking solution to those accustomed to the desktop metaphor. For more info check out our recent hands-on.

Milton's Red Stapler by Nat Smith Illustrations at http://www.etsy.com/shop/NatSmithIllustration

One of the best things about being part of a local community of creatives is the constant transfer of knowledge. When you have your head down in your business, it?s easy to only pay attention to your own issues. But being a part of a group of small-business owners means that you can constantly be alerted to new information relevant for your biz.

Such was the case this last week when a Kyla of the SF Etsy Team posted about a new California Board of Equalization (BOE ? our state sales tax collection agency) memo, explaining a new ?sub-permit? requirement. Up until now, if you were a seller in California, you registered for a seller?s permit for your permanent place of business. For brick and mortar shop owners, this was their shop, obviously. For online sellers, this typically is just your house, studio, or office. That one seller?s permit was all you needed, and you were free to sell at ?temporary? locations like craft fairs without any further regulations.

As of April this year, the BOE is requiring California sellers to file for an additional sub-permit for each temporary location at which they sell. This means you need to file with the BOE for every craft fair, flea market, or trunk show at which you?ll be selling. Thankfully, there is no additional cost, but there is additional effort. California sellers will need to either call the BOE or visit a BOE office to register their temporary selling location. Applications by mail can take 2 to 4 weeks, while in person applications can be done immediately. By the summer, the BOE will have an easier online registration process, hopefully in time for the craft show season.

More information for California sellers can be found here: http://www.boe.ca.gov/news/specialnotices.htm (Click on the April 2012 notice)

Even though this new information is specific to California sellers, the larger point is that new laws, regulations, and requirements pop up all. the. time. As a small-business owner, you have so many federal, state, and local agencies, boards, and regulatory bodies to answer to that it is fairly difficult to stay up to date on everything, all while trying to make your business succeed (and sneak in some free time too!). Ignoring or just plain being ignorant of these regulations can cost you time and money down the road. That?s why being a member of a small-business group, whether online or in person, local or nationwide, is so imperative to the health and legal security of your business.
