Senegal opposition leads cortege to police station (AP)

DAKAR, Senegal ? The leaders of Senegal's opposition led a long cortege of cars to the capital's central police commissariat to protest the detention of a human rights activist.

Alioune Tine, the organizer of the anti-government protest Friday which turned violent after the country's top legal body validated President Abdoulaye Wade's bid for a third term, was detained Saturday.

The constitution was revised after the 85-year-old Wade took office in 2000 to limit the number of terms to two. Wade argues the law is not retroactive and so cannot be applied to him since he took office before it took effect.

Late on Sunday, the constitutional council was meeting to consider the appeals submitted by opposition leaders who are calling into question the legality of Wade's candidacy. They are also considering an appeal submitted by music icon Youssou Ndour, whose application was disqualified because he allegedly did not turn in enough legal signatures on his petition to run for president.

The procession of cars descended along the capital's coastal highway, and surrounded the police station, located in a narrow side street in the downtown Plateau district near the presidential palace. On Saturday, the 52-year-old Ndour had tried to enter the building where Tine was being held, and a scuffle ensued when the police refused to let him in.

"We need to go get Alioune Tine," said El Hadj Diouf, an opposition leader who is a member of parliament. "If we don't react, those in power will prevent us from being at the forefront of our revolutionary battle."

Syria says 'terrorists' blow up gas pipeline (AP)

BEIRUT ? An "armed terrorist group" in Syria blew up a gas pipeline at dawn Monday, the state-run media said, as activists reported gunfire and explosions in the suburbs of Damascus as the country's conflict moves ever closer to the capital.

The pipleline carries gas from the central province of Homs to an area near the border with Lebanon. SANA news agency reported that the blast happened in Tal Hosh, which is about five miles (eight kilometers) from Talkalakh, along the border with Lebanon.

Further details were not immediately released.

There have been several pipeline attacks since the Syrian uprising began in mid-March, but it is not clear who is behind them.

President Bashar Assad's regime has blamed "terrorists" for driving the country's 10-month-old uprising, not protesters seeking democratic change.

On Sunday, Syrian troops in dozens of tanks and armored vehicles stormed rebellious areas near the capital, shelling neighborhoods that have fallen under the control of army dissidents and clashing with fighters.

Activists and residents said at least 62 people were killed in violence nationwide.

The large-scale Sunday offensive suggested the regime is worried that military defectors could close in on Damascus, the seat of Assad's power. Early Monday, activists reported hearing gunfire and blasts in the Damascus suburbs, but there were no details.

The rising bloodshed added urgency to Arab and Western diplomatic efforts to end the 10-month conflict.

In the past two weeks, army dissidents have become more visible near the capital, seizing several suburbs on the eastern edge of Damascus and setting up checkpoints where masked men wearing military attire and wielding assault rifles stop motorists and protect anti-regime protests.

Their presence so close to the capital is astonishing in tightly controlled Syria and suggests the Assad regime may either be losing control or setting up a trap for the fighters before going on the offensive.

The uprising against Assad, which began with largely peaceful demonstrations, has grown increasingly militarized recently as more frustrated protesters and army defectors have taken up arms.

In a bid to stamp out resistance in the capital's outskirts, the military has responded with a withering assault on a string of suburbs, leading to a spike in violence that has killed at least 150 people since Thursday.

The United Nations says at least 5,400 people have been killed in the 10 months of violence.

The U.N. is holding talks on a new resolution on Syria and next week will discuss an Arab League peace plan aimed at ending the crisis. But the initiatives face two major obstacles: Damascus' rejection of the Arab plan that it says impinges on its sovereignty, and Russia's willingness to use its U.N. Security Council veto to protect Syria from sanctions.

'Barefoot Bandit' sentenced to 6 1/2 years

A federal judge on Friday sentenced "Barefoot Bandit" Colton Harris-Moore to 6 1/2 years in prison for his infamous two-year, international crime spree of break-ins, and boat and plane thefts that ended in 2010.

Harris-Moore hopscotched his way across the United States, authorities said. He flew a plane stolen in northwestern Washington to the San Juan Islands, stole a pistol in British Columbia and took a plane from Idaho to Washington state, stole a boat in southwestern Washington to go to Oregon, and took a plane in Indiana and flew to the Bahamas, where was arrested.

He earned his nickname because he committed several of the crimes without wearing shoes.

Story: 'Barefoot Bandit' gets 7 years for crime spree

Harris-Moore apologized to his victims shortly before U.S. Judge Richard Jones imposed the sentence, which will be served concurrently with state prison time.

"I now know a crime that took place overnight will take years to recover from," the 20-year-old said in court.

He particularly apologized for stealing planes, saying his arrogance led him to keep alive his dream of flying.

"What I did could be called daring, but it is no stretch of the imagination to say that am lucky to be alive ... absolutely lucky," he said. "I should have died years ago."

Before Friday's sentencing, defense attorneys said federal prosecutors released cherry-picked excerpts from emails in an effort to make Harris-Moore appear callous and self-aggrandizing.

He called the Island County sheriff "king swine," called prosecutors "fools," and referred to reporters as "vermin." He also described his feats ? stealing and flying planes with no formal training ? "amazing" and said they were unmatched by anyone except the Wright brothers.

But Harris-Moore's lawyers claim the full emails show that he is sorry for what he did and thankful for the treatment he received from a state judge who called his case a "triumph of the human spirit." The state judge sentenced him last month to seven years, at the low end of the sentencing range.

The attorneys acknowledged that in certain instances he bragged, but they said those writings were simply the product of an impulsive adolescent and don't reflect his true remorse.

In court Friday, the judge asked Harris-Moore to speak to young people who may look up to him because of his exploits.

"I would say to younger people they should focus on their education, which is what I am doing right now," he said. "I want to start a company. I want to make a difference in this world, legally."

Federal prosecutors had asked for Jones to impose a 6-1/2 year sentence to be served while Harris-Moore serves his state time. His attorneys had asked for a federal sentence of just under six years.

There will be another hearing in a month to decide how much restitution Harris-Moore will be required to pay.

Woman's quest could mean Medal of Honor for dad

Thanks to the tireless effort of his daughter and nearly four decades after his death, Shemin may finally be awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions, but never received, many believe because he was Jewish. (AP Photo/Jeff Roberson)?

LABADIE, Mo. (AP) ? It was bravery at the highest level: William Shemin defied German machine gun fire to sprint across a World War I battlefield and pull wounded comrades to safety. And he did so no fewer than three times.

Then, with the platoon's senior soldiers wounded or killed, the 19-year-old American took over command of his unit and led it to safety, even after a bullet pierced his helmet and lodged behind an ear.

Yet Shemin never earned the nation's highest military citation, the Medal of Honor ? a result, many suspected, of the fact that he was Jewish at a time when discrimination ran rampant throughout the U.S. military.

Now, nearly four decades after his death, Shemin may finally get that medal, thanks to the tireless efforts of his daughter, whose long quest to see her father decorated also opens the door for other overlooked Jewish veterans of the Great War.

"A wrong has been made right here," said Shemin's daughter, 82-year-old Elsie Shemin-Roth of Labadie, Mo., a small town about 40 miles southwest of St. Louis.

Last month, President Barack Obama signed the National Defense Authorization Act, which contains a tiny provision known as the William Shemin Jewish World War I Veterans Act. It provides for a Pentagon review of Jewish soldiers and sailors who may have been overlooked for the Medal of Honor simply because of their faith.

Shemin's daughter was the driving force behind the measure, an effort that began a decade ago when she read news accounts of a similar law that provided for review of Jews possibly denied recognition in World War II. She was horrified there was no similar mechanism for World War I veterans.

So she began gathering military records, photos, commendations and firsthand accounts of her father's heroism. Eventually, she enlisted the help of her congressman and support from both U.S. senators from Missouri.

Retired Army Col. Erwin Burtnick of Baltimore, who is active in the Jewish War Veterans of the U.S.A., helped get the bill passed. He also reviewed Shemin's war record and will present the case on his behalf to the Pentagon.

"I believe, based upon the criteria of World War I, the level of heroism exhibited by Sgt. Shemin will rise to the Medal of Honor," Burtnick said.

At the time, the enlistment age was 21, but Shemin lied about his age and got in at 18. A tall, strapping athlete who played semi-pro baseball at age 15 and later played college football at Syracuse, Shemin was sent off to France. On a hot day in August 1918, he and his platoon were doing battle near a river in Burgundy.

One of his superiors, Capt. Rubert Purdon, later wrote in support of a Medal of Honor: "With the most utter disregard for his own safety, (Shemin) sprang from his position in his platoon trench, dashed out across the open in full sight of the Germans, who opened and maintained a furious burst of machine gun and rifle fire."

Shemin didn't stop there. Casualties were heavy. Many senior platoon leaders had been killed or badly hurt, so the young sergeant led the group out of harm's way over the next three days.

Along the way, a German bullet hit him in the head, went through the steel helmet and lodged behind his left ear. Shemin eventually collapsed and was hospitalized for three months. The wound left him deaf in that ear.

His heroics did not go unnoticed: Shemin was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the nation's second-highest military honor.

He eventually left the military, got a degree from Syracuse and started a greenhouse-and-nursery business in the Bronx, where he raised three children.

Shemin was satisfied with the medal he got, his daughter recalled, and only occasionally wondered if he was passed over for the Medal of Honor because of anti-Semitism.

"My father told me there was a lot of discrimination, but he didn't dwell on it," she said.

But once, when another soldier paid a visit, Shemin's daughter was struck by something the man told her.

"He witnessed my father's actions," said Shemin-Roth, who was then 12. "He told me, 'Your father never got the medal he deserved because he was a Jew.' I thought to myself how terrible that was."

Shemin was 78 when he died in 1973. His sense of determination clearly rubbed off on his daughter. Her first husband died when she was just 43 and a mother of five. She went to college and became a nurse.

Since then, she's done volunteer work in war-torn areas around the world. Back in Labadie, she heads a nonprofit animal-rescue group, and her property on a rural hilltop is home to dozens of rescued animals, from cats and dogs to donkeys, geese and fish.

The new law may have arrived too late to recognize many Jewish heroes from World War I. They're all gone now ? the last surviving American World War I veteran died last year. Even many of their children have died or are well into their 80s and 90s, Burtnick said, making it less likely that surviving relatives will have enough documentation to prove worthiness for the Medal of Honor.

So far, Burtnick said, the only veteran whose case will be presented for review is William Shemin.

A decision could come by spring. If the Pentagon approves, the president would present the medal on Shemin's behalf to his daughter in a White House ceremony. Just the thought chokes her up.

"I try so hard to think of what my father would think of this," she said. "He was such a humble man. All I can see in my head is this big handsome man sitting down, tears in his eyes."

First Person: What My College Degree Means to Me (ContributorNetwork)

*Note: This was written by a Yahoo! contributor. Do you have a personal finance story that you'd like to share? Sign up with the Yahoo! Contributor Network to start publishing your own finance articles.

My college degree helped me pursue a successful 30-year career in advertising and public relations. However, it only happened after I realized I had not made the right decision in choosing my college major.

Pursuing The Major Course I Wanted

It all began when I had earned four years of tuition under the GI Bill of Rights by serving in the U.S. Navy. Ever since childhood, I had wanted to be an artist, and that was my chance to enroll as a fine arts freshman at the Philadelphia Museum College of Art (now the University of the Arts).

An Enjoyable Fine Arts Education

Throughout my undergraduate years, I appreciated the challenges and encouragement of the school's excellent teaching staff. My courses consisted of drawing, painting, sculpture and other fine arts classes. Some of my paintings were accepted for exhibition at local galleries. I was graduated with top honors and the degree of bachelor of fine arts.

Then it was time for me to earn a living from what I had learned in four years of college. I made the rounds of the many galleries in Philadelphia and New York selling my art, and had some moderate success. However, the sales were few and far between, and my income wasn't nearly enough to support myself.

Had I Made an Error in Judgment?

After a year, I came to the conclusion that I had chosen a field that, while traditionally attractive, wasn't practical in the reality of today's business world. While I hadn't wasted my four years of fine arts studies, they had not prepared me for the necessity of making a living.

I had several choices. I could go on painting, get some kind of part-time job to pay my bills, and hope I'd eventually become a successful exhibiting artist. The other choice was to go back to college and major in practical business subjects.

Fortunately, an application I'd sent to the University of Pennsylvania earned me a lab assisantship and free tuition at the Annenberg Graduate School of Communications there. I majored in mass communications and public relations, with a minor in graphic arts. After two years, and armed with a much more practical resume, I began another job search.

A Favorable Career Turn

Another fortunate opportunity coincided with earning my Master of Arts in Communications degree. Prudential Financial, Inc. was just establishing an Eastern regional office in a Philadelphia suburban area, and hiring a staff of more than 3,000 employees. I applied for the newly-created position of Public Relations and Advertising Manager, and was hired to direct the 30-person creative staff.

I recently retired after 30 years with Prudential. Today I consider my education choices and experiences may be of value to college students in the same situation I was after earning my bachelor's degree. Looking back, I had not realized then the impracticality of attempting a fine arts path in the real world where income opportunities are very limited.

Business-related degrees are essential in finding practical career promises. I believe my decision to enhance my education goals beyond fine arts to communications offered me those opportunities. For today's students, armed with the right credentials and personal determination, there's no limit to the heights that talent, hard work and ambition can earn for them.

Vestas to lay off more than 2,300 workers (AP)

COPENHAGEN, Denmark ? Vestas Wind Systems A/S, the world's biggest maker of wind turbines in terms of revenue, said Thursday it is to layoff 2,335 people worldwide and warned that an additional 1,600 jobs in the U.S. could be at risk if Congress doesn't extend tax breaks for renewable energy.

Vestas, which is based in Aarhus, Denmark, said the layoffs were part of efforts to reduce fixed costs by more than euro150 million ($191 million) as it deals with tough competition and a market slowdown following the global recession in 2008-2009.

Vestas said it would lay off 1,300 employees in Denmark; 450 of those would come in Spain, Italy, Germany and Sweden while 400 would go in China and 182 in the United States. The company is preparing for further cuts if the U.S. doesn't extend its Production Tax Credit for renewable energy, which expires at the end of 2012.

"This can result in layoffs of an additional 1,600 employees at the factories in the USA," Vestas said in a statement.

In 2010, Vestas was awarded about $51 million in federal tax credits in the U.S., where it has invested more than $1 billion in four facilities in Colorado. The U.S. operations are headquartered in Portland, Oregon.

The Danish company expanded rapidly until the economic downturn slowed investments in wind power. In addition, Vestas has lost market share to Chinese competitors.

Sluggish sales have already forced the company to slash its forecasts for 2012 twice. It has also abandoned its 2015 sales target of euro15 billion ($19.1 million) and the aim of reaching a profit margin of 15 percent.

Vestas shares fell 4 percent to 60.30 kroner ($10.32) in Copenhagen after the layoffs were announced.

Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt called it "very, very sad news" for the country, which seeks to profile itself as a green energy leader.

"This is one of the businesses that we thought would be the new way of doing green technology," she said. "Despite the setback that we have seen right now, this is and will be the right approach."

Last year, Vestas laid off 3,000 workers after posting a 24 percent drop in profits in the third quarter.

Sydbank analyst Jacob Pedersen said the cutbacks were a "big step in the right direction" to make the company more competitive.

After the cuts, Vestas said it will have around 20,400 staff and 25 factories worldwide.

Church worried over rising violence in Venezuela (AP)

CARACAS, Venezuela ? The leadership of Venezuela's Roman Catholic Church raised concerns Thursday about rampant violent crime, urging President Hugo Chavez's government to curb the country's rising murder rate.

"The grave danger is that many crimes go unpunished in Venezuela," Bishop Diego Padron, president of the Venezuelan Episcopal Conference, said in reading a statement prepared by the organization.

The Venezuelan Violence Observatory, a non-governmental group that tracks violent crime, says at least 19,336 Venezuelans were slain during the first 10 months of last year ? a 9.8 percent increase from 2010, when 17,600 people were killed.

The groups estimates an additional 2,000 people were killed in November and December. That would mean about 57 Venezuelans were slain for every 100,000 inhabitants of the South American country, the group says.

Justice Minister Tareck El Aissami said at a news conference earlier this week that authorities had encountered difficulties trying to combat violent crime.

El Aissami put the official murder rate at 48 murders for every 100,000 inhabitants.

He did not provide details regarding official statistics, which have not been released in recent years.

MasterImage 3D glasses-free smartphone and tablet displays hands-on

When MasterImage 3D announced two new displays for smartphones and tablets, you knew a hands-on would be inevitable. Based on the company's patented cell matrix parallax barrier, each display promises to eliminate much of the headaches typically associated with glasses-free 3D. As an added benefit of the cell matrix configuration, more light is allowed to pass through, which should prolong battery life. The smartphone display measures 4.3-inches at 720p resolution, while the tablet sizes up at 10.1-inches with a 1900 x 900 layout. Generally, our thoughts on MasterImage's 3D technology were two-fold. First, it's absolutely true that the display is less nausea inducing, but when the image was viewed at its most proper angle, the three-dimensional effects were also less awe-inspiring. Nonetheless, the company has lined up partners for both displays and you should see the handiwork featured in consumer technology by the second half of this year.

Samsung Galaxy Ace (Gingerbread) not connecting to mobile network or wireless

Hi Cyanogenmod forum,

First of all, my dearest apologies if I have posted this in the wrong section. I wasn't sure if to post it here, as there is a Samsung section, but not one that covers my phone.

I've only recently purchased my phone and have now been experiencing difficulties. I rooted it about 3-4 days ago and everything was fine, today I tried to sim unlock it, so that I didn't have to use 3, but could instead use any other network. I went to the following website and tried their method:
http://www.freeyoura...ng_ace-g10-mini

This didn't work and only came up with many question marks, what it does seem to have done though is make my wireless fail and my mobile network not connect.
At the beginning it would often set itself to be in flight mode, without having the plane at the top. The tick would however be there under settings and if I tried to remove it nothing would happen, it would just keep loading and if the phone screen goes off, then the tick would be back without any loading happening whatsoever. At some point I read online to clear the cache in safe mode, I did so and now that problem seems to be gone.

My phone does not go into flight mode anymore, but it still doesn't let me access the mobile network settings, as this is blanked out.

I assume this is some sort of fault that has occured because of trying to use that website / app, but I am unsure of this.
When connecting to wireless it connects and says that I am connected, but I can't actually do anything online. Occassionally it will send a few whatsapp messages through and that's about as far as it gets. I can't actually send any, only receive it seems, but even that only when I just turn it on and that has only worked once so far.

I've also tried using other sims and they all come up with the same result.
Another important point to mention is that my phone says there is no sim card when I try to do a software update. It reads " Error Insert SIM card". The sim card is however inserted fully and correctly. I've tried 2 others, but from 3 (my provider) and they don't work either. What shall I do?

To sum up: I can't access my mobile network settings, am disconnected from my provider and the wireless doesn't seem to be working.

I have my files backed up, at least most of them. Should I try to restore to factory settings and see if that helps?

Thanks for any help in advance, I will try to come online as often as I can to check this thread, because I really need some help.

Yasumy

Edit: I have just restored to factory settings and it is still coming up with the same issue. Instantly I noticed the signal strength bars with the cross above it. This seems hopeless... I don't know what else to do..

I have now also tried an O2 sim and that didn't make a difference. I assume this means I've really messed up my phone somehow.

Edit 2: My phone also decides when it wants to be on. The only way I can prevent it from switching itself back on is by taking out the battery. If I then reinsert it, it doesn't turn on by itself it seems.

Edit 3: I've now even unrooted it and the problem still persists. I don't see what else it could be. It must be some hardware fault, right? I will try and take it back to the shop anyways and see what they say. This is as long as no one replies in time. Thanks for any help offered.

Paul Abrams: God's Candidates Failing: Could the Almighty Dollar Be More Powerful Than the Almighty?

God, we were led to believe, spoke to Michele Bachmann, Rick Perry, Rick Santorum and, yes, even serial liar and philanderer Newt Gingrich, and told each of them to run for President of the United States. God's ways are, of course, mysterious, so it was never adequately explained why he chose four to go for it, rather than the one he told Pat Robertson was going to win the presidency anyhow.

Oddly, despite their having the almighty on their side, none of them is running away with the race. Indeed, one is out, two are struggling and the fourth is perhaps having his day in the sun.

Mitt Romney, the frontrunner, has wielded a different weapon -- the almighty dollar. He has unsheathed the almighty dollars his so-called independent Super-PAC has accumulated to smite anyone who raises his head above water to challenge him.

Of course, true to his character, Romney has borne false witness about his Super PAC, claiming it is truly independent of him. And, of course, true to character Newtie has claimed that the substance of Romney's ads are fraudulent -- whereas, in fact, they are all true and in context, demonstrating that Romney has the capacity to tell the truth, just not about himself.

The person other than himself that Romney will never be honest about is President Obama. That, of course, is to be expected. After all, he IS a Republican (isn't he, Rick?) While the almighty may disapprove and consign Mitt to "the other place" for his lies, he has enough of those almighty dollars to make people believe the most outrageous of his lies.

God's messengers on earth, or at least his political messengers, are going to make a judgment god himself would not -- choosing the one Pat Robertson already knows will win to be the sole bearer of the torch, asking (telling?) the others to drop out. It will be interesting to watch how obedient god's servants are to his political surrogates.

Gingrich, who never acted terribly concerned about what god prescribed anyhow, is likely to ignore god's surrogates because his Super-PAC just received $5M from casino billionaire Sheldon Adelson, who uses the almighty dollars he makes from gambling to obey the almighty's supposed biblical commands for Jews to occupy the entire West Bank and Gaza, and foment opposition to a two-state solution. How does Newt's use of gambling money square with claims about his "redemption"? Is Ralph Reed listening?

All of this comes from the party that swears obedience to the Founders -- who clearly expected both the absence of the almighty and the almighty dollar from determining political outcomes.

Lord knows, the Founders are probably spinning in their graves, even faster than almighty dollars spin someone's record or character.

Migrants 'reduce jobs for Britons'

10 January 2012 12:15am

There are 23 fewer jobs for British workers for every 100 migrants from outside the EU, the Government's immigration advisers have said.

An increase of 100 foreign-born working-age migrants in the UK was linked to a reduction of 23 Britons in employment between 1995 and 2010, said the Migration Advisory Committee (Mac).

It comes after a report by the National Institute of Economic and Social Research (Niesr) said the number of immigrants coming to the UK had little or no impact on the number of unemployed.

Average wages remain the same, the Mac said, but it added: "Migrants are found to increase wages at the top of the UK wage distribution and to lower wages at the bottom of the distribution."

The impact and displacement of British workers also does not last forever, the Mac report found. "Those migrants who have been in the UK for over five years are not associated with displacement of British-born workers," it said.

Between 1995 and 2010, the working-age migrant employment total rose by 2.1 million and currently displaces 160,000 British-born workers, it said. But the report added that EU migration had "little or no impact on the native employment rate".

Professor David Metcalf, chairman of the Mac, said: "Assessing the impacts of migration is not a simple decision and our conclusions will require careful consideration by the Government.

"However, our research suggests that non-EEA migration is associated with some displacement of British workers. Financial impacts of migration are also complicated but considering overall GDP does not present a true picture. Instead, the impact of migration on the economic well-being of the resident population should be the focus."

Immigration Minister Damian Green said: "This Government is working to reduce net migration from the hundreds of thousands a year we saw under the last government, to the tens of thousands we saw in the 1990s.

"Controlled immigration can bring benefits to the UK, but uncontrolled immigration can put pressure on public services, on infrastructure and on community relations. This report makes clear that it can also put pressure on the local labour market. We thank the Mac for its work and will now consider the report more fully as we work to regain control over our immigration system."

Thuuz Android App for Google TV Gives DISH Customers Instant Alerts of Most Exciting Moments in Sports

Real-time app for Google TV allows fans to jump immediately to the most exciting action

LAS VEGAS ? Jan. 8, 2012 ? [NASDAQ: DISH] ? Never again will a DISH Network L.L.C. customer miss the exciting moments of a great sporting event. DISH has partnered with Thuuz to create an enhanced Google TV application that helps avid sports fans instantly find the best live and upcoming games to watch on television.

Using special computer algorithms, the Thuuz Android app for Google TV monitors the excitement levels during broadcasts of Major League Baseball, National Hockey League, soccer, cricket and rugby games, along with both pro and college football and basketball. When the excitement level on field reaches a crescendo, an alert pops up on the viewer's TV screen to let the viewer tune to the action.

Since DISH is the only pay TV provider to pair a set-top box with Google TV devices, the Thuuz application can also automatically record the most exciting moments of the game for later viewing.

"DISH partnered with Google TV to spur innovation in TV apps," said Vivek Khemka, vice president of Product Management for DISH Network. "Thuuz is a great example of an application for the TV that enhances the viewing experience. The power of the Thuuz app comes from its ability to cut through the overload of televised games and take serious sports fans immediately to the best sports action."

The Thuuz app uses factors such as parity, pace, novelty, momentum and context in the algorithms that automatically assign an excitement rating to each event. Thuuz comes from the second syllable of "enthusiast."

"The thrill of watching sports comes from witnessing the drama and suspense as it unfolds," said Warren Packard, CEO and co-founder of Thuuz. "Instead of just catching the news after the fact, DISH subscribers can now watch the most compelling sports action play out, either live or time-shifted. The combination of DISH's extensive sports programming, Google TV's interactive platform, and excitement analytics built into the Thuuz app deliver an optimal experience for the sports enthusiast."

All devices with Google TV and Android 3.1 work with the Thuuz app. The new Logitech Revue with Google TV is available to DISH Network customers for only $99. Customers can order by logging in to their DISH Network account at www.dish.com or by calling 888-590-3684. Intel exploring ways to help Stephen Hawking speak

CAMBRIDGE, England (AP) ? Intel Corp. is looking for ways to help famed British physicist Stephen Hawking reverse the slowing of his speech, according to a senior executive with the American chipmaker.

Hawking was 21 when he was diagnosed Lou Gehrig's disease, an incurable degenerative disorder that has left him almost completely paralyzed. While an infrared sensor attached to his glasses translates the pulses in his right cheek into words spoken by a voice synthesizer, the nerves in his face have deteriorated and those close to him say his rate of speech has slowed to about a word a minute.

Speaking late Sunday on the sidelines of a conference celebrating Hawking's 70th birthday in the English city of Cambridge, Intel Chief Technology Officer Justin Rattner said his company had a team in England to explore ways to help the celebrity scientist communicate more quickly.

"This is a research project," Rattner told The Associated Press, saying the team's task was to gather data for further study.

Hawking has gained world renown as an expert on cosmology and the author of a best-selling series of books popularizing the field of theoretical astrophysics. His achievements have been all the more remarkable because of his condition. Most of those with Lou Gehrig's disease die within two to five years of their diagnosis, but Hawking has spent nearly half a century carrying out pioneering research work.

Finding ways to keep Hawking communicating has long been a challenge. Lou Gehrig's disease, also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, attacks the cells that control muscles ? leading to weakness, slurred speech and paralysis.

Hawking managed to overcome his deteriorating speech for a while by dictating scientific papers to a secretary, or speaking through an interpreter. He lost his voice entirely after a tracheotomy in 1985, and a computer was built to synthesize his speech in a distinctive, robotic monotone that has since become almost as famous as the scientist himself.

At first, Hawking retained some limited hand movement and could manage about 15 words a minute. Now that even the nerves in Hawking's cheek are beginning to fade, Rattner argued it was time for a new approach ? saying that solutions based on brainwaves or eye tracking were among the technologies being considered.

But Rattner said his best bet was on high definition cameras that pick up on the minute movements in Hawking's face to synthesize his speech.

"My wager is some form of facial feature recognition will unlock it for Stephen," he said.

Rattner did not give any specific timeframe for the company's work, and Intel didn't immediately respond to a request for further information.

The Santa Clara, California-based company has long provided Hawking with many of his technological needs ? including an upgrade of his speech software and the connection that links his wheelchair-mounted computer to the Internet.

GOP hopefuls to debate, again (AP)

CONCORD, N.H. ? Mitt Romney's rivals have one more chance to bruise the front-runner ahead of Tuesday's voting during a Sunday morning faceoff just hours after he largely brushed aside their criticism in the opening round of a weekend debate doubleheader.

The six GOP hopefuls are set to spar one final time before voters go to the polls Tuesday in New Hampshire's first-in-the-nation presidential primary.

They met onstage in nearby Manchester less than 12 hours earlier. That Saturday night contest left Romney's rivals squabbling among themselves and unable to knock him off stride.

Romney, in turn, largely ignored his fellow Republicans and focused instead on President Barack Obama.

"His policies have made the recession deeper and his policies have made the recovery more tepid," he said, despite a declining unemployment rate and the creation of 200,000 jobs last month.

Over the course of the lively 90-minute debate, there were attacks aplenty as Romney's GOP opponents vied to emerge as his principal rival in the primaries ahead. Romney won an eight-vote victory in the Iowa caucuses last Tuesday and is far ahead in the pre-primary polls in New Hampshire.

That leaves his pursuers little time to stop his rise, and, all but conceding New Hampshire to the former governor of next-door Massachusetts, they're mostly focusing their efforts on the South Carolina primary on Jan. 21.

Romney, who often touts his business background, was attacked in the opening minutes of the debate.

Rick Santorum went first, dismissing him as a mere manager.

"Being a president is not a CEO. You've got to lead and inspire," he said.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich followed a few moments later, referring to published accounts that described how some workers were laid off after Bain Capital, the firm Romney once led, invested in their companies and sought to turn them around by cutting staff and firing workers.

He said Romney should be judged on the basis of whether "on balance, were people better off or worse off by this style of management."

In reply, Romney said Bain had created 100,000 jobs, and that a businessman's experience was far better to fix the economy than a career spent in Washington.

"I'm very proud of the fact that the two enterprises I led were successful," he said, referring to Bain and another firm.

More than an hour later, Romney turned one question about his vision for the country into an attack on Obama that is part of his standard campaign speech. While his rivals stood by silently, he accused the president of trying to turn the United States into a "European-style welfare state."

Texas Rep. Ron Paul, meanwhile, assailed Santorum as a "big government person," an allegation the former Pennsylvania senator disputed. Santorum, a social conservative, finished a close second to Romney in Iowa this week, with Paul coming in third.

Gingrich was fourth in Iowa, Texas Gov. Rick Perry fifth and Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, who has since quit the race, finished last. Jon Huntsman, a former governor of Utah, did not compete there, putting his effort into trying to make a good showing in New Hampshire.

The skirmishes reflected the state of the race: Romney the acknowledged front-runner under attack from his rivals, who face an increasingly urgent need to emerge as his main conservative challenger.

Saturday's debate at Saint Anselm College was the first in more than three weeks, and the first since Bachmann's departure.

Service Employees International Union (SEIU)

Posted on

Political leanings: Democratic/Liberal

Spending target: Unknown

One of the most influential groups in Washington, SEIU represents about 2.1 million workers in health care, government service and property service professions. It spent more than $70 million during the 2008 elections and an additional $54 million during the 2010 midterms, putting it high on the list of the top-spending PACs in both years, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

SEIU President Mary Kay Henry announced on Nov. 16 that the labor union was endorsing President Barack Obama?s 2012 reelection campaign. In a blog post on the union?s website, Henry wrote that ?President Obama is the only candidate for president who shares our vision of America as a land of opportunity for everyone.? Obama garnered SEIU?s backing during the 2008 campaign as well, though not as early as this time around. The union?s political action committee (SEIU COPE) spent more than $27 million in 2008 supporting his candidacy through advertising and other election communications.

In a press release announcing its most recent endorsement of the president, the union committed to engaging its members, their families and friends and the general public through a ?robust campaign,? using phone banks, door-to-door canvassing and increased fundraising. The Wall Street Journal reported that Henry declined to say how much the union intends to spend in total. But, as of Dec. 30, 2011, the group has spent more than $14 million of the more than $22 million it has raised for federal elections in 2012.

Back in July, SEIU partnered with Americans United for Change, a liberal advocacy group, to run television ads ? in four Republican House districts ? during the debate over whether to raise the federal debt ceiling. The ads described Republicans in Congress as ?driving us toward the edge of the cliff,? ?recklessly risking default? and ?recklessly risking jobs.? And in August, SEIU launched another media campaign accusing Republicans of ?voting to take care of the wealthy? instead of focusing on jobs for the middle class.

In 2010, we found that the group played ?fast and loose with its facts? in a TV ad attacking then-Sen. Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas, a moderate Democrat who faced a liberal primary challenger. SEIU ran?several such false, misleading or distorted ads against the incumbent Democrat, who survived her primary challenge but lost in the general election. In addition to the midterm elections, the group also got involved in the health care debate and the Ohio governor?s race in 2010.
