APNewsBreak: EPA moves to ban some rodent poisons

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Environmental Protection Agency is moving to ban the sale of a dozen rat and mouse poisons sold under the popular D-Con brand in an effort to protect children and pets.

The agency said Wednesday it hopes to reduce the thousands of accidental exposures that occur every year from rodent-control products. Children and pets are at risk for exposure because the products typically are placed on floors.

The agency had targeted a handful of companies two years ago, saying they needed to develop new products that are safer for children, pets and wildlife. All but Reckitt Benckiser Inc., manufacturer of D-Con, did so.

The company will have at least 30 days to request a hearing before an administrative law judge. If no hearing is requested, the ban will take effect.

Relationships are the focus of Feb. 1-2 'Marriage Revolution' seminar

Gabrian and Rod Zwemke will be teaming up for ?Marriage Revolution,? a free seminar being sponsored by Crossroads Church on Feb. 1-2. Preregister by calling 706-387-0404.

Crossroads Church is hosting a free marriage seminar, called Marriage Revolution.

?With the added stress of financial pressures today, marriage seems to be tougher than ever,? said Rod Zwemke, teaching pastor at Crossroads, who along with his wife Gabrian, will lead the seminar in early February. The Zwemkes have been married 18 years.

Relationships can be amazing but they can also be a nightmare. Sometimes they become stale. All face challenges. The worst thing you can do with one is ignore the warning signs or take it for granted.

?The need today in our homes is a marriage revolution founded on the love of God,? said Zwemke, who invites the community to come experience a Marriage Revolution that will change the way you live.

?We want to serve our community by building strong families,? said Zwemke.

?What we are offering is a Biblically-based marriage seminar that can help people get a fresh perspective, renewed hope and practical help with their marriage,? said Zwemke.

Consider some of the challenges to today: Maintaining a healthy marriage in this day and time is harder than ever ? financial pressures, demanding schedules, lack of a good role models.

?God defines marriage as ?two becoming one flesh,?? said Zwemke. ?This is a statement of far more than physical intimacy, but a statement of intent ? that two individuals would no longer function as individuals, but as a team ? both seeking the greater good of the relationship instead of themselves.

?The expectation God has is oneness, not sameness. The two people are not to be clones of each other, but unified on the core issues and values that are necessary for join decision-making. It means putting the needs of your spouse ahead of your own,? he said. ?It means learning the art of collaboration, communication and deferring to one another.?

According to Zwemke, the foundation for marriage is God himself.

?He created us for intimacy with him and with others, including a spouse. He wired us to share life with someone,? said Zwemke. ?Marriage is designed for our good, the good of our spouse, our children and a means to bring God glory. If a couple can recognized that their marriage concerns more than just them, but ultimately is a way to honor God, they can work through issues under God?s leadership.

?The most common false expectation in marriage is that the marriage itself or the other person will make you happy. That is a huge burden to put on another person or the marriage,? he said. ?Jesus told us to find our happiness, significance and peace in God alone. Our spouse is someone who adds to that joy that comes from God. When a spouse expects the other person to fulfill them, it is a recipe for disaster.

?When the marriage relationship is one that compliments a healthy relationship with God, the marriage can flourish apart from unreal expectations,? said Zwemke.

The couple will share from their experience and observations.

?In our experience, a lack of intimacy with God by the individuals is the single greatest problem in a marriage,? said Zwemke. ?The second is communication.

?We spend an entire session on personal spiritual growth and another on helping couples communicate and conflict in a healthy way. We also give some practical steps to ?fight fair?,? he said.

Chinese auto part maker Wanxiang allowed to acquire A123 Systems

Albuquerque News.Net Wednesday 30th January, 2013

China's biggest auto parts maker Wanxiang offered $257million to buy almost all of A123's assets after it went bankrupt last year. A123 Systems LLC is a newly formed, wholly owned subsidiary of Wanxiang America Corporation.

"Excluded from the acquisition is A123's Ann Arbor, Michigan.-based government business, including contracts with the U.S. military, which have been acquired by Navitas Systems LLC through a separate transaction," A123 Systems said in a statement Wednesday..

The military business unit was sold separately to US firm Navitas Systems for $2.25million.

The completion of each deal is subject to certain closing conditions

The deal had been under review amid concerns that US technology would be transferred to foreign firms. There was also opposition from some US lawmakers who felt technology developed by A123 using government grants should not be allowed to be made availabe to China.

"Technology produced by A123 and funded by US taxpayers should not simply be shipped off to China so that the military applications for these materials can be reproduced abroad," Senator John Thune, a Republican from South Dakota, said in a statement.

"Senator Chuck Grassley and I remain concerned about the national security implications of this transaction and have called on CFIUS for a full briefing of the review," he added.

On Wednesday, the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) granted approval to Wanxiang to acquire " non-government business assets of A123 Systems, Inc".. .

Pin Ni, president of Wanxiang America, said the firm was looking forward to "closing the transaction and to continuing to foster the technologies A123 has worked so hard to develop".

"There is no question that CFIUS process is there to fully protect national security issues and we are glad that we could have addressed all the concerns CFIUS has," said Pin.

Included in this transaction are A123's automotive, grid and commercial business assets, including technology, products, customer contracts and U.S. facilities in Michigan, Massachusetts and Missouri; its manufacturing operations in China; and its equity interest in Shanghai Advanced Traction Battery Systems Co., A123's joint venture with Shanghai Automotive.

"Distributions to creditors on account of their claims against A123 Systems, Inc. will be made pursuant to a liquidating plan or other process, in either case under the supervision and with the approval of the Bankruptcy Court," the bankrupt US company clarified.

South Africa's First Black Billionaire Pledges To Donate Half His Wealth

If you were looking for good news, here's a bit of it from South Africa: Patrice Motsepe, the country's first black billionaire, announced today that he will donate half his fortune in order to help the poor.

Reuters reports:

"Mining magnate Motsepe, with assets estimated by Forbes magazine of $2.65 billion, said he is making the pledge to benefit the millions of South Africans who have seen little gain in their personal fortunes since white-minority rule ended in 1994.

"The Giving Pledge is a philanthropic initiative started by U.S. billionaire Warren Buffet along with Bill and Melinda Gates that has recruited nearly 100 billionaires, mostly Americans, who have pledged to donate the majority of their wealth to charity."

According to The Financial Times, Motsepe's wife, Precious, said that his wealth would be given away throughout his lifetime.

Motsepe, the Times adds, amassed his fortune as the chairman of African Rainbow Minerals, a mining company. He is South Africa's fourth richest man. The fifth, reports the Times, is his brother-in-law Cyril Ramaphosa.

There's no word whether Ramaphosa will join Buffet's Giving Pledge.

Working to identify early warning signs in juvenile offenders

Jan. 29, 2013 ? Red flags are easy to recognize in the days following a tragic event like a mass shooting. That's why a group of Iowa State researchers is working to identify those early warning signs in juvenile offenders before they turn into a pattern of criminal behavior.

It is often difficult for people to understand what leads to criminal behavior in children or teens. But by the time a juvenile is arrested, or referred to the juvenile court system, the child generally has displayed a pattern of antisocial behavior, said Matt DeLisi, professor of sociology at Iowa State University.

In some extreme cases, DeLisi said children as young as 5 years old are committing crimes. So when that child becomes an adult, he or she may already have a lengthy criminal record. That is why DeLisi, and the team of researchers, wants to understand what contributes to this behavior in order to correct it.

"With onset in criminal careers, the first sign of that problem behavior is an indicator of how severe it will be," DeLisi said. "If you can help them, you save a ton of money and you save a lot of problems. But it's just the issue of correctly identifying them and that raises a bunch of ethical and other issues."

The connection between the onset and the severity is similar to other ways children start to develop, whether it is positive or negative, at an early age.

"If you have someone who is 3, or even 2, and is already reading it would suggest that the person is highly intelligent," DeLisi said. "The reason is because the emergence or the onset of the behavior is usually inversely related to what they will become. The earlier something appears the more special they are or extreme."

With criminal behavior, the onset begins with rule violations, but researchers found a juvenile's first arrest or contact with the police is the strongest indicator of future problems. The study published in the Journal of Criminal Justice included 252 children living in Pennsylvania juvenile detention centers. The offenders ranged in age from 14-18 and on average had committed 15 delinquent acts in the prior year.

Researchers also discovered that children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder got into trouble at a younger age than other juvenile offenders without ADHD. In fact, their first contact with police happened more than a year prior to other offenders. Youth with conduct disorder were also more likely to be arrested at a younger age. However, researchers urge caution on how the results are interpreted.

"This by no way means that every child with ADHD or conduct disorder will become delinquent or ultimately be arrested. What it does mean is that future work needs to address why some youth with ADHD or conduct disorder become delinquent and others do not," said Brenda Lohman, an associate professor in human development and family studies at Iowa State.

"From a preventive standpoint, this information could then help identify support systems and intervening mechanisms for families and parents, and ultimately decrease rates of antisocial behaviors of children with ADHD or conduct disorder," Lohman said.

In addition to preventive measures, researchers hope to build on this study to better understand the family dynamics that can lead to mental and behavioral issues in children.

"Extensive research indicates that economic hardship has an adverse effect on the well-being of families," said Tricia Neppl, an assistant professor in human development and family studies at Iowa State.

Economic pressures increase the risk for emotional distress, which Neppl said can lead to harsh disciplinary practices. She is working on a study to determine if such hardships, when a child is between the ages of 3 and 5 years old, impact the child's mental health when they are 6 to 13 years old.

"The results suggest that economic adversity influences parental emotional health, marital distress, and hostile parenting which predicts child mental health disorders, such as conduct disorder and ADHD, during later childhood and early adolescence," Neppl said.

As researchers understand more about the connection with antisocial behavior, DeLisi expects there will be an even greater push for intervention and treatment for ADHD and conduct disorder.

"Early interventions are very successful, but they require a lot of investment on the part of people who may be the least willing or able to invest," DeLisi said. Researchers from the University of Pittsburgh and Saint Louis University also contributed to the study.

Lilly loses ground in fourth quarter to generics

(Reuters) - Eli Lilly and Co said on Tuesday that fourth-quarter earnings fell as competition from generic drugs, particularly for its top-selling schizophrenia drug Zyprexa, drove revenue lower.

The U.S. drugmaker earned $827 million, or 74 cents per share, compared with $858 million, or 77 cents per share, a year earlier.

Excluding special items such as asset impairments and restructuring, Lilly earned 85 cents per share. Analysts, on average, were expecting 78 cents per share.

Revenue dropped by about 1 percent to $5.96 billion, above Wall Street expectations of $5.81 billion.

The company said falling sales from the loss of the Zyprexa patent was partly offset by gains in sales of other drugs and its animal health products.

Lilly said it expects earnings this year to increase to $3.82 to $3.97 per share, excluding special items. It said profit would benefit by 7 cents per share from a research and development tax credit that was delayed until this year due to the late signing of federal legislation.

It predicted sales will be flat to a bit higher this year, despite expected generic competition in December for its $5-billion-a-year antidepressant Cymbalta.

Is Personalized Web Experience the New SEO? | DigitalMoz SEO ...

We have seen web entities like Google and Facebook deliver personalized browsing experience to the internet users.

Search Engine giant, Google provides advertisements search suggestion and alike based from your query.

Similar with the big G, Facebook recently announced that it will launch Graph Search which let?s you find data that are based on your network?s information.

For example, you can search for the most visited restaurant by your friends in your city, music that your schoolmates have listened to and even look for friends who like a particular movie or page.

This potential has seen by Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer in developing personalized mobile web content.

?There?s an opportunity, not only to provide that value to the end user, but also to create a great business.? she said.

User value and business

Developing a landscape that lets people discover things in fun and personalized ways is a great tool for marketing a business online. Not only that it provides value for the user but it also sells a product in a polite manner.

We have seen a glimpse of this Foursquare, Yelp, Instagram and similar apps few years ago.

So while there are companies that are too busy building reputation by themselves, there are ones that are genuinely being loved by the people.

And while the answer to my title above is yet to be known, personalized web experience is something that every business should consider. It?s a deeper level of social media presence that are graphed by likes, interest and culture.

Sprint confirms they'll be carrying the 128GB iPad 4

Sprint has confirmed that they will indeed be offering the recently announced 128GB variant of the iPad 4. This also leads us to assume other carriers will follow suit.

Fared Adib, senior vice president of Product Development at Sprint confirmed they'd be carrying the 128GB model today:

"Sprint is delighted to confirm that we will be offering our customers additional iPad options with the new 128GB iPad with Retina display."

As iPads become everyday devices for a lot of people, sometimes even replacing desktop computers and laptops, more storage capacity options are always welcome. The 128GB capacity iPad 4 will be available for purchase on February 5th.

Anyone out there readying their money to pick up the larger capacity?

Muse to play anniversary gig for War Child charity

LONDON (Reuters) - British rock band Muse will headline a gig in London next month to mark the 20th anniversary of War Child, a charity that aims to protect young victims of conflicts around the world.

The gig on February 18 at the Shepherd's Bush Empire will be the fifth time War Child has staged a concert in association with the BRIT Awards, Britain's top pop honors which take place this year at the O2 Arena on February 20.

War Child is to receive the inaugural Special Recognition Award at the ceremony, while Muse has been nominated for best British group and best British live act.

Muse's song "Survival" was chosen as the official song for the Olympic Games in London last year.

The BRIT Awards Concerts at the 2,000-capacity Empire have raised more than 600,000 pounds ($945,000) for War Child and included performances from Coldplay, The Killers, Blur and Kasabian.

"We are proud to have a continuing association with War Child, who have been doing amazing work over the last 20 years," said Muse lead singer Matt Bellamy.

"It's great to see their efforts being recognized at this year's BRITs and we are really looking forward to playing this special show for them," he added in a statement.

War Child UK says it has changed and saved the lives of some 800,000 children in war-affected countries including Bosnia, Rwanda, Afghanistan and Iraq.

ZTE V81 tablet shows up in website ahead of MWC, touts 8inch display and Jelly Bean

Not quite content with the release of its Grand S earlier this month, ZTE looks to be preparing a new tablet to go along with that aforementioned flagship handset. The V81 -- which will presumably make its official debut at this year's Mobile World Congress -- is, according to the company's own website, said to be boasting an 8-inch (1,024 X 768) display with a dual-core, 1.4GHz CPU (mum's the word on chipset specifics), 1GB RAM and 4GB of internal storage that can be expanded to up to 32GB via microSD. Speaking of which, other listed incisions include a full-size USB and HDMI, while a 3,700 mAh battery and Android Jelly Bean are also part of the relatively decent spec sheet. Naturally, pricing and availability details are still slim, but it shouldn't be too long before we learn more on that front -- in the meantime, there's a gallery filled with V81 press shots after the break for you to peruse over.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama said he'll sign a $50.5 billion emergency relief measure for Superstorm Sandy victims as soon as it lands on his desk.

Three months after Sandy ravaged coastal areas in much of the Northeast, Obama chided lawmakers for taking their time to approve the funding even as he commended them for providing the long-awaited aid.

"So while I had hoped Congress would provide this aid sooner, I applaud the lawmakers from both parties who helped shepherd this important package though," Obama said in a statement late Monday.

Despite opposition from conservatives concerned about adding billions of dollars to the nation's debt, the Senate cleared the bill, 62-36, after House Republicans had stripped it earlier this month of spending unrelated to disasters.

"This is a huge relief," said Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y.

Northeast lawmakers said the money is urgently needed to start rebuilding homes, businesses, public transportation facilities and other infrastructure damaged by the Oct. 29 storm, one of the worst to strike the Northeast. Sandy is blamed for more than 130 deaths in the U.S. and tens of billions of dollars in property damages, particularly in New York and New Jersey.

The measure is aimed primarily at helping residents and businesses as well as state and local governments rebuild from the storm. The biggest chunk of money is $16 billion for Housing and Urban Development Department community block grants. Of that, about $12.1 billion will be shared among Sandy victims as well as those from other federally declared disasters in 2011-13. The remaining $3.9 billion is solely for Sandy-related projects.

More than $11 billion will go to the Federal Emergency Management Agency's disaster relief aid fund for Sandy and other disasters. Another $10 billion is devoted to repairing New York and New Jersey transit systems.

Earlier in January, Congress approved and Obama signed a $9.7 billion bill to replenish the National Flood Insurance Program, which has received well over 100,000 claims related to Sandy. Added to the new, $50.5 billion package, the total is roughly in line with the $60.4 billion Obama requested in December.

The aid package was greased for passage before the last Congress adjourned and the new one came in on Jan. 3. But Speaker John Boehner refused to bring it to the floor after two-thirds of House Republicans voted against a "fiscal cliff" deficit-reduction deal raising taxes on couples making more than $450,000 a year while deferring some $24 billion in spending cuts in defense and domestic programs.

The ruckus after the Senate had passed an earlier $60.4 billion Sandy relief package by a nearly 2-to-1 margin on Dec. 28 exposed deep political divisions within Republican ranks. "There's only one group to blame for the continued suffering of these innocent victims: the House majority and their speaker, John Boehner," Republican New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie fumed at the time.

Top House Republicans responded by bringing new Sandy aid legislation to the floor under ground rules designed to win over as many Republicans as possible while retaining support from Democrats eager to approve as much in disaster aid as possible.

GOP leaders cut spending in the Senate bill unrelated to disasters. One was to transfer $1 billion from training programs for Iraqi policemen to bolstering security at U.S. diplomatic missions. The shift in money followed a Sept. 11 terrorist attack on the American consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

Also deleted was $188 million for an Amtrak expansion project that included new, long-planned tunnels from New Jersey to Penn Station in Manhattan.

As with past natural disasters, the Sandy aid bill is not offset with spending cuts, meaning the aid adds to the deficit. The lone exception is an offset provision requiring that $3.4 billion for Army Corps of Engineers projects to protect against future storms be covered by an equal amount of unspecified spending cuts in other programs before next October.

The Senate on Monday rejected, 35-62, an attempt by conservatives to amend the final package with an offset provision to cut federal programs across the board by one-half of 1 percent through 2021.

Teen's Choking Game Death Leads Mom to Education Effort ...

Since Jeana Monroe?s 15-year-old son RJ Moore died on Dec. 4, she?s been driven to educate people about what the choking game is so that teens stop dying from playing it.

RJ died as a result of playing a choking game, which is a way to experience a kind of high by depriving the body of oxygen to the point of fainting. While the game is certainly dangerous even with others to act as a safeguard, for RJ, the game turned deadly.

?They play it at parties? and it?s a regular habit of these kids, but us parents don?t know anything about it or if we do know about it we think that it won?t happen to our child,? Jeana said.

Medical examiner Tom Terry told Jeana that while RJ died by playing the choking game, there?s no code for this type of death and officially his death was ruled accidental, but the cause was ?probable to choking game.?

This designation is cause for concern for Jeana because the Center for Disease Control doesn?t have a code for keeping track of how many people die of the choking game, but there?s a petition circulating to change that.

?So many kids have died of this, but there are no stats to keep track of it,? she said. ?So we have no idea how many kids are dying from it, but it seems to me that it?s a silent epidemic.?

The details surrounding RJ?s death haunt Jeana. She remembers where the chairs were positioned in his room, the type of belt he used and how the belt was positioned around his neck. But she also remembers how much RJ loved his brothers.

?My kid was such a good kid,? Jeana said. ?We re-did his room to help with the healing process and his little brother Maxwell, who just turned two, keeps wanting to go in there. He says he needs to go see angel and he?ll go in there and just sit in the room and say, ?I see angel, I see angel.?

?You have to wonder, does he see something??

Living with a broken heart, Jeana is dedicating her time and energy to educating parents and teens. She thinks about the signs that RJ was displaying that, if she would have known more about it, would have told her he was playing the choking game: the red marks on his neck, his bloodshot eyes, complaints of stomachaches and headaches, the wear marks on his bed posts, and the fact that he kept asking for belts, but didn?t wear them.

?A lot of schools are afraid to mention this because they think they are giving ideas to our children, but the truth is that they already know what it is and we?re doing a disservice to them in not talking about it,? she said.

And she doesn?t want other parents to go through what she?s going through.

So in her mind?s eye Jeana can see herself making a commercial ? a public service announcement ? warning kids about the dangers of the choking game. She would introduce herself and tell people about RJ. She would tell them about what the choking game is and how it?s not cool to do because when her son did it, he died.

?When you go through something like this, your heart is just broken,? Jeana said. ?If kids won?t listen to anything else, I wish they would just know this ?you could potentially ruin your family. I?m never going to be the same again.?

A benefit, which is being held to raise awareness of what the choking game is and to raise money to help pay for the hospital bills from RJ's death and to pay for funeral expenses, will be held from 4 to 10 p.m. Feb. 2 at Bar 525, 525 Wisconsin Ave.

Pets help children deal with stress of military life ? Pets For Patriots ...

For military children, a family pet can help smooth some of the ups-and-downs that come with life in the armed forces.

In addition to providing unconditional love and companionship, a dog or cat can help strengthen the physical and emotional health of its owners, particularly children. Here are just a few ways Fido or Fluffy can be your child?s best friend, and so much more.?Boy and dog

Good for the body

Living with a pet can strengthen a child?s immune system. Studies show that children growing up in homes with a furred pet are at lower risk for allergies and asthma. A?study?by a University of Wisconsin-Madison pediatrician showed that infants in homes with pets have a lower incidence of pet allergies and eczema, an allergy-caused skin condition, than their pet-less peers. Finnish?researchers found that young children with dogs or cats suffered fewer ear conditions and were prescribed antibiotics less often than children who did not live with dogs or cats.

Dogs can also help ward off childhood obesity. Children with pets spend about 10 minutes more per day on physical activity than children without pets. While this amount of time might sound insignificant, the time over the course of a dog?s life or an entire childhood can add up. Moreover, while wearing activity monitors, dog-owning children in this same study engaged in more movements per minute than children without dogs.?girl and cat

Good for the mind

Dogs can motivate a child to read simply by being a silent, non-judgmental listener. Researchers at?Tufts University?s School of Veterinary Medicine found that second-graders who read aloud to a dog for 30 minutes a week during the summer showed a slight gain in their reading ability. The comparison group, second-graders who read aloud to humans for 30 minutes a week, did not show such a gain. And while there was no attrition in the group which read aloud to dogs, one-third of the comparison group dropped out of the summer reading program.

Good for the soul

Relocation is a fact of military life and may cause a child to feel socially isolated or lonely. A family pet can provide comfort, support and stability during this difficult time.?Research?has found that children with pets feel less anxious and apprehensive about relocating than children without pets. Many times, walking the dog or playing with the family pet outdoors can facilitate social introductions to others in a new neighborhood.

The family pet can also help provide a sense of security when one parent must deploy. Pets can serve as a coping mechanism and important attachment figures for children during a parent?s deployment.?Psychologists?have found that children in single-parent families feel more closely bonded to their pets than children with two parents present at all times.

Pets can provide life lessons as well. Children learn about birth, injury, illness and death, from the life cycle of a pet. In addition, kids develop a sense of responsibility by caring for a pet, and animals can connect children with nature and teach them to respect other living things.?Girl and dog

Finally, a family pet can help build a child?s character to weather the everyday stress of military life.

According to the?American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, ?[d]eveloping positive feelings about pets can contribute to a child?s self-esteem and self-confidence. Positive relationships with pets can aid in the development of trusting relationships with others. A good relationship with a pet can also help in developing non-verbal communication, compassion, and empathy? [P]ets can be safe recipients of secrets and private thoughts.?

Adopt, don?t shop, for your family pet

A family pet can serve as a child?s all-around best friend and so much more ? an immunity booster, personal trainer, reading coach, science teacher, confidante and therapist, among them. When your family is ready to add a four-legged member, adopt from your local shelter. You?ll be teaching your kids a lesson in life saving.

Do you know a child ready for his or her?BFF?(best furry friend)?

Super Bowl XLVII
It's the Super Bowl. All other Sunday night programing has been pushed aside, so you'll either be huddled around the flatscreen watching 49ers/Ravens or... we're not sure what.
(CBS, February 3rd, 6:30PM)

House of Cards
Netflix's next venture into the world of original programming begins Friday morning, when it will make the entire first season of its series House of Cards available for streaming. State officials unveil new Health Insurance Exchange explanatory ...

A new website with explanations and background on the coming state Health Insurance Exchange was launched Tuesday by the Minnesota Management & Budget department.

The site attempts to show the benefits of the exchange and provide information on how it will work when it goes into effect in 2014.

Pages on the website are focused on?individuals and families,?small businesses,?agents and brokers and health plans.

The state defines the Health Insurance Exchange as "a new central marketplace where individuals, families and small employers can access quality, affordable health insurance and receive tax credits or assistance to help pay for coverage. The exchange will empower families, small businesses, and low-income Minnesotans to choose the quality health coverage they need at a price they can afford."

Lauvergeon takes center-stage in EADS board shake-up

PARIS (Reuters) - French officials threw support behind former nuclear boss Anne Lauvergeon to be the first chairwoman of EADS on Sunday in a move likely to test efforts to wrest the European aerospace group away from political influence.

An adviser to French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault said the Socialist government strongly supported Lauvergeon, a former aide of late President Francois Mitterrand and France's most high-profile female business leader.

EADS is carrying out the biggest reorganization in its 12-year history after France and Germany agreed on a new shareholder structure designed to secure their vital interests while freeing the company from day-to-day interference.

Company watchers say the composition of the board will test the spirit of the accords and determine whether Chief Executive Tom Enders is free to run the company as independently as he claims, or will be forced to rely on building alliances.

EADS shares are up 18 percent this year on hopes of a fresh start after years of political in-fighting.

"The government is very supportive (of Lauvergeon)," the French prime minister's adviser said.

"As shareholder, we think she has all the qualities required to be the non-executive chairwoman of EADS."

EADS declined comment.

Under a new ownership structure agreed late last year, France and Germany will own 12 percent each of EADS , the parent company of Toulouse-based planemaker Airbus, but their powers to veto nomination and strategy are curtailed.

Lauvergeon, ex-head of reactor maker Areva is one of two personalities lined up to represent France's interests at the Airbus parent group alongside ex-central banker Jean-Claude Trichet, but the choice of chairman is meant to be independent.

Echoing a newspaper report, another French government source said German Chancellor Angela Merkel had backed Lauvergeon in a meeting with French President Francois Hollande last week.

However, Merkel's office denied any deal over the EADS post.

"The German government does not want to take a stance (on this issue) for the time being," spokesman Steffen Seibert said in Chile where Merkel was attending an EU-Latin American summit.

BOARD LIST

Although Lauvergeon enjoys the backing of some French officials, the French finance ministry issued a statement apparently designed to cool speculation over the appointments and recalling a company-driven process agreed in December.

The December deal allows Enders to nominate a triumvirate designed to protect French defense interests in EADS, of which two would serve on the main board. The arrangement is mirrored by similar arrangements for Germany, which has parity in EADS.

The finance ministry said Enders had proposed Lauvergeon and Trichet, as well as a retired French general, to oversee a holding company protecting technologies like nuclear weapons.

Of these three, Lauvergeon and Trichet would, if the list were accepted, serve on the main board, it said in a statement.

Under the company restructuring, the government has the power to accept or reject the list in its entirety but cannot hand-pick individual members nor directly appoint the chairman.

Still, the appointment of a new board chairman is seen as a delicate balancing act.

As long as EADS is run by the German-born Enders, the chairman of the board is likely to be French.

An informal unpublished agreement also stipulates that four board seats each should be reserved for French and German citizens, according to two people familiar with the discussions. But two of the four on each side must be independent.

It remained unclear how Lauvergeon's status as state watchdog would affect her chances of becoming chairwoman, or how easily she would fit alongside Enders as CEO. Both have strong characters and a reputation for a hands-on management style.

People familiar with the accords say they do not exclude one of the government-endorsed board members also becoming chairman but warn this could create a potential political imbalance. This could leave the door open to an independent to lead the board.

Potential French independent board members include Alcatel-Lucent Chairman Philippe Camus, Saint-Gobain Honorary Chairman Jean-Louis Beffa and ex-Thales CEO Denis Ranque.

A French official said the government did not favor Camus for EADS, believing he had work to do turning round Alcatel.

Sources said German board members would include former business association leader Hans-Peter Keitel, former EADS chairman Manfredd Bischoff, former Deutsche Bank chief operating officer Hermann-Josef Lamberti and Enders himself as CEO.

Underscoring EADS efforts to become a global company, four remaining seats on the 12-person board are likely to include three existing members - British mining executive Sir John Parker, Indian-born steel boss Lakshmi Mittal and the Spanish economist Josep Pique i Camps - and possibly a U.S. citizen.

Write With Spike

Hey Y?all,

My friend Amy Friedman?who wrote a terrific essay that appeared in Stricken, an anthology about grief that I co-edited-- has a new memoir out. Desperado?s Wife, about the time in her life when she was married to a man in prison for murder. You can get the book by visiting AmyFriedman.net, Pages A Bookstore in Manhattan Beach, California and on Amazon. Watch her website for an airdate announcement for her interview with Katie Couric. Below, Amy answers questions about her life and her book. SG: Hi Amy. Great to be back in touch. Will you start out by giving us a little background re: your writing career? AF: I began writing short stories when I was a teenager, inspired at first by a desire to give voice to a grandmother who had stopped speaking and whose story I wanted to know. And then I never stopped, though throughout my teens and 20s and into my 30s I was a devout fiction writer. I received my MFA in creative writing from City College of New York, worked for years as an editor and writer, and in 1985 moved to Kingston, Ontario, Canada where I happened upon a newspaper that was, at the time, a literary wonder. The Kingston Whig Standard had a beautiful Saturday magazine. I sent off a couple stories to the editor who invited me in for a talk and offered me a weekly column. That column is what turned me into a personal essayist and memoirist. Over the eight years I wrote Hard Lines, that column, I also published two memoirs and hundreds of stories and essays. I also began writing Tell Me a Story for The Whig, a newspaper feature of adaptations of myths, legends, folk and fairytales and within a year I was under contract with Universal Press Syndicate?to syndicate the column internationally. Twenty years later, I?m still writing that weekly column. I also teach personal essay and memoir in Los Angeles where I moved in 2002. SG: Your new book, Desperado's Wife, is a memoir about a time in your life when you met a prisoner who was behind bars for murder, married him, and what ensued. I'm guessing a question you are often asked is, "What were you thinking?" or "How could you marry a murderer?" Is that right? Will you give me a little laundry list of FAQs you get hit with and a couple of answers you perhaps have memorized by now? AF: Why is definitely the question, and it?s often followed by an eye roll or two. And quickly followed by the question: Did you ever get to sleep together? And how did you get past the fact that he had killed someone, were you afraid? The shortest answer is you have to read the book, which of course leads me to your next question?why I decided to write it. So I?ll take those two together. Will and I were married for 7 years, 5-1/2 of which he was in prison (I met him during his 7th year inside); when he was paroled (and yes, even those who have been sentenced to murder receive parole?though less and less in the States), and the last 18 months of our marriage we lived together, but the marriage disintegrated when our strongest bond?the fight we were waging together to win his parole?was gone. He also did not cope well with the world when he was first released?he fell apart emotionally and that put a strain on our relationship?a strain that finally broke us apart. ?But he did not fall apart in the way most people imagine released prisoners do. The general image of a ?murderer? is someone who does nothing else?who moves through the world seeking to kill. When I was an official visitor (I first visited prison as a columnist so that I could learn about prison), and during the years Will and I were married, I came to know dozens of men serving time for murder. It?s important to understand that each of these people were individuals, each one with a story?bar fights gone awry, drug rivalries, accidents, drunk driving. Most of the stories involved drugs and/or alcohol. I did not meet any serial killers (though it is the women who marry psychopaths and serial killers that seems to me to inspire psychologists to write books about ?those prisoners wives.?) But Will and I fell in love the way people do outside?at first I was drawn to him because he was intelligent and when I asked him questions about prison, he was the person who gave me the answers that made most sense. For instance, the very first thing he told me was that if I wanted to understand prison, I ought to talk to prisoners? families because they understand prison and never did anything to hurt anyone. And so I began to talk to families. I also continued to talk to Will (and many other prisoners, guards and administrators) until one day a prison official told me I was welcome to continue visiting, that I was welcome to write stories about prison for the paper, but that I was NOT permitted to talk to one inmate. That inmate was Will. I was na?ve enough to think that the official had just given me valuable information?had told me that it was Will who was telling me the truth about prison. I ignored his instruction and continued talking to Will, at which point prison officials wrote a letter to my editor letting him know the prison was expelling me, refusing to allow me in. My editor who had always been my staunch supporter did not support me in my effort to fight for the right to keep visiting. The prison I later learned (by accessing their letter through the Privacy Commission Act) had accused me of inappropriate behavior (which was untrue)?I argued with my editor: This was, I said, Canada, a free country; prison officials could not decide who could and who could not investigate what went on behind those walls, who a writer could or could not talk to. Alas, at just that point in time the prison had been purchased by a large corporate syndicate and my editor, worried about his own job, turned his back on me. I?m rebellious by nature, and that literally pushed me into Will?s arms because once I was forbidden to visit prison, the only way I could continue going in was to sign on as a personal visitor. And I did. And soon after that, Will?s mother and children invited me to join them in what were known as Private Family Visits (colloquially conjugal or trailer visits). I applied to do so, but the warden (whom I had interviewed many times and knew well and with whom I had always gotten along) refused my request. He told us we could have a trailer visit in a year?if we ?behaved.? Will asked me to marry him?if we were married, the prison could not refuse us the visit. By that time I was so angry and alienated from those around me who were judging without knowledge and turning their backs on me, and I was so attracted to and engaged by and in love with Will, I quickly agreed. Again, that?s the snapshot. What followed were years of great difficulty because overnight after I married Will, I became, in the eyes of the prison system and of many outside, just as suspicious and subject to invasion of privacy as were all prisoners. All prisoners? wives, children, parents, sisters and brothers and friends suffer the humiliation of things like strip searches and long waiting lines and hostility and job loss and every other imaginable indignation. Indeed, the publisher canceled my column, friends turned their backs, for a while so did my family, a board of directors on which I had long served kicked me off its board, and I wound up in combat against prejudice and misunderstanding?the sort that I think inspires those eye rolls, and the question. That?s not to say I don?t understand why or how people ask, but one of the reasons I knew I had to write the book was to continue what I started out to do when I first visited prison?long before I met Will. That was to paint a picture of the world that is prison, to try to better understand and then describe in writing what happens to those impacted by prison, to write about what it is like trying to have a have a relationship against the odds. When the relationship collapsed, I collapsed for about a year. I knew I would have to write about it to find my way back to making sense of the story, of all the specifics of what happened. ? There?s another important piece to the book and that is that Desperado?s Wife is actually two love stories?the love story between me and Will, but maybe more important, the love story between his daughters and me. They were 14 and 8 when we met, and I helped to raise them for most of those years. And they are still two of the most important loves of my life. One of the reasons I wanted to write the book was to help to lift the mantle of shame from them, a mantle that is the result of others? lack of understanding and prejudice against anyone who loves a prisoner.

?SG: Has writing it been healing?

AF: Yes, but also painful. The book took ten years to write?because it started out filled with the fury I felt towards those who had turned their backs and full of the despair the divorce left me feeling. After several drafts of writing with an agenda of sorts (to prove prisoners wives are no different from other women who love someone), I realized I had to give up trying to prove anything. I decided to try to write the book as a novel from the point of view of a prisoner?s child?that way readers wouldn?t come to the book with a built-in question (how could you love him?) because everyone understands a child?s love for a parent (no matter how flawed that parent is). And after another three years of working on the novel, I finished it and a good friend and colleague read it and looked me in the eye and said, ?You do realize you have to write this as a memoir.? At first I wanted to punch him, but I knew he was right. I went back to the drawing board, back to beginning as if I were walking into prison for the first time, open and ready to learn what there was to learn, to find what there was to find. The journey led me to a deep understanding of how this story happened, to my realization that ever since childhood I?d longed to know what prison does to human beings in large measure because I am the daughter of a man who was a Jewish prisoner of War in World War II and granddaughter of a man who was a prisoner of War in Siberia in World War I. That is how I know that prison seeps deep under the skin not only of those who are imprisoned but of their loved ones, and future generations. SG: Where is your ex-husband-- does he know about the book? AF: He was released from prison in 1999, and he has remained out, living and working in Canada. There is no animosity between us, and though I haven?t consulted with him about the book. We did have a conversation a few years ago when an excerpt of the book was published in the NewYork Times Modern Love column,?and he found out about it and read it. I was worried?that?s why I hadn?t told him about it. I thought he would object to my telling this story. But in fact he called me and told me he fully supported me in anything I wrote, that he knew me to be a person of integrity, and he was confident that my writing would always reflect that integrity. SG: This is probably one of those stupid questions, since I know we should take life on a case-by-case basis, but if I told you that I was going to marry a prisoner, would you counsel me one way or the other, for/against? AF: Not stupid at all, but the answer has two parts. The first is yes, I would. In fact, a friend of mine has a daughter who is engaged to a man in prison, and I?ve been talking to her for months, trying to convince her to wait until he is released to marry him. But the counsel does not come in the form of ?he?s a loser, why would you do that?? or ?you?re throwing your life away.? Rather it?s that the life of a prisoner?s spouse is full of suspicion and hostility and loneliness and a kind of poverty of the soul. Part two: I know that my counsel and anyone else?s is likely useless. People in love do what they feel they need to do, what they must do. Love is powerful medicine, and I don?t think there?s a verbal antidote, and if you?re anything like me, if I counsel you for or against, you?ll rebel against my counsel. SG: What was your publishing process-- agent, NY publisher, etc? Or more DIY? Whichever it was, will you tell us the pitfalls and rewards you encountered? AF:?Ah publishing! For the last 10 years, ever since I moved back to the States, it?s been more or less the bane of my existence. I have an agent (my second in the last ten years), and both have loved the book and sent it out far and wide. The rejections have come mostly in this form: This is a fascinating story and beautifully written but it would not interest enough people. One editor even wrote, ?But there aren?t enough prisoners? wives to make this saleable.? But my agent convinced me she could keep at it. In the meantime, a producer at the Katie Couric show came to me?she?d read my piece in the New York Times and another excerpt in Salon and a third in your book, Stricken: 5,000 Stages of Grief, and she wanted me to appear on Katie to tell my story and feature the book, and I decided I would not appear on the show without a book. So I went the self-publishing route. The reward is I have a book between covers, the pitfall?because the book is self-published it is ineligible for all kinds of reviews and awards for which I wish it were eligible and the cost, of course?in terms of money and time invested in doing everything on my own?hiring my own editors, copyeditors, designers, and so on, and working with no publicist or machine behind me. But I?ve reached out for reviews and so far these have been more positive than I could have dreamed?most people have told me that once they picked up the book they couldn?t put it down?and I think it?s opened some eyes, and hearts. That?s my hope. And of course it would be nice to make back the investment ? And meantime my agent has the self-published version out for consideration too. We shall see. SG: How's the marketing going? My experience is that it's pretty tough out there to get noticed. On the other hand, I really am pleased that, as a self-publisher this time around-- I got to write exactly what I wanted. But the marketing can be a bit exhausting. Agreed? AF:?Absolutely agreed. I?ve gone this route before with a series of CD Audiobooks I?ve produced from Tell Me a Story, and when I put those out into the world, I developed a schedule which was this: For three years, each day I wrote one letter to someone?to librarians, to reviewers, to bloggers, to schools, to churches, to women?s groups. And now, six years since the release of the first CD, I do nothing and the CDs continue to sell?not gangbusters but it?s always amazing to me, and I sell at least one CD or story each day to someone somewhere. I thought to do that with this book, but in some ways I?d prefer now to put that energy into writing the next book. That?s why people like you, and interviews like this, are blessings. I?m scheduled to do a radio interview with KPFK (Experience Talks) in early February. But you?re absolutely right. Making this book be and say precisely what I wanted it to be and say is, ultimately, what matters. And that it exists has left me with the energy to begin to put prison behind me. SG: Working on another big project now?? AF: Slowly, slowly bringing myself back into an old novel I first wrote when I was in graduate school, and ?I have another book recently completed that?s coming out in September. This is with St. Martin?s Press, it?s a co-authored memoir with Anne Willan. In other words, I?m the ?ghost? (I?ve ghosted several books, though for this one I have an author credit). Anne is a well-known cooking teacher and author of 30 books who had a famous cooking school in Paris, and the book?s called One Souffle at a Time, and I love her and the story and the book?and it couldn?t be more different from Desperado?s Wife. Her story is one of travel, adventure, food, life in a chateau in Burgundy?very little darkness, lots of light, and Anne?s amazing recipes, too. SG: What else would you like to tell me? AF: Without you and Stricken, I don?t know that I would have ever finished Desperado?s Wife. The writing and the efforts to entice editors was such a slog until the day your co-author, Katherine Tanney, called to tell me you and she had submitted my excerpt to Dan Jones at Modern Love and that he wanted to run a portion of my piece. That opportunity seriously turned everything around for me, first because at the time so many editors were telling me no one cared about the story of a prisoner?s wife, and then because Dan cared so deeply, and afterwards because the feedback was oceanic, and 95% was positive. So I honestly feel that without you and Katherine on my side, I might not have made the long trek to publication.

And this: That 95% of prisoners get out of prison eventually, and families of prisoners are the single best hope that that release will end up being positive and nurturing. And as Will told me on the first day we met, prisoners? families understand prison, and they never did anything wrong. Before I was a prisoner?s wife, I thought all those women (wives, moms, daughters, sisters) standing at the bus stop outside the prison waiting to go home were probably smuggling drugs or knives. Ninety-nine percent of them not only aren?t smuggling knives and guns and drugs, they?re only trying to hold tight to their love, despite the burden of sorrows.
