Assistive Technology Has Created A Higher Level Of Independence ...

pThe development of adaptive equipment has come a long way from crutches and manually powered wheelchairs. Now, for example, if you lose a leg, a prosthetic replacement can be designed specifically for your body. There are also vehicles that can be altered to allow someone with a physical disability to drive again. Even more, there are many community access devices in place that enable individuals living with a disability to get around by themselves. The point is, with the advancement of assistive technology, individuals living with a disability can now obtain the independence they deserve./p
pProsthetics are not only for legs, they can be used to replace many different body parts that were lost or are missing from some kind of trauma, disease or defect. They are mechanical devices that functions with the human skeleton, muscle and nervous systems. These devices permit enhanced motor control. For some people this means walking again or having the ability to use a hand./p
pWhen it comes to driving, a title=adaptive equipment href=http://www.clockconversions.com/assistive-technologyadaptive equipment/a can be installed in a vehicle in order to allow someone with a disability to drive again. Some examples of this equipment include electronic steering devices, joystick controls, quadriplegic driving systems, touch-pad controls and power head rests. These different pieces of equipment bring mobility back to someone who thought they might never drive again./p
pOther types of assistive technology exist as well. They also help make life easier for those living with a disability. As earlier mentioned, we have come a long way in terms of wheelchair technology. Now there are powered wheelchairs. There are also powered scooters. If a manually operated device that helps with mobility is sought out, one could always choose a cane or walker. If one suffers from a speech impediment, there are devices available that generate speech. These are referred to as augmentative communication devices and some examples include voice amplifiers and speech recognition devices. On a more basic level, ramps, lifts, grab bars and flashing smoke detectors are all types of assistive equipment that make life easier for one living with a disability. There is even technology in existence that makes public transportation and use of ATMs easy. Also, yet another type of community access assistive devices are talking pedestrian signals./p
pThrough the development and use of assistive technology, life for your loved one who is living with a disability can be made much simpler. The above are numerous examples of how far we have come in terms of adaptive equipment. Living independently and having access to mobility are now easily obtainable for those living with disabilities. These simple luxuries enhance quality of life and provide your loved one with the safety and independence they deserve./p

For Legal Purposes, Is Voluntary Cohabitation Between Opposite-Sex

I recently debated this topic with a colleague and I thought it was worth discussing here. The question is whether cohabitation between opposite-sex couples who choose NOT to marry should be treated the same for legal purposes when the relationship ends as same-sex couples in long-term relationships who cohabitated but did NOT have the right to marry.

Before we go any further, let me set the stage. For purposes of this discussion, let?s assume that the same-sex couple lived together in a committed relationship for 25 years. They had a commitment ceremony with 125 guests at a banquet facility complete with a live band, a sit-down dinner and a wedding cake. They exchanged vows and commitment rings. They celebrated their union the same as an opposite-sex couple would have with the exception that the State wouldn?t allow them to obtain a marriage license. As the years went by, they pooled their finances to purchase a shared home. They own 2 cars which are titled in both names. They have always maintained joint checking and savings accounts. Both names appear on their certificates of deposit (CDs). Each person is named as beneficiary on the other?s life insurance policy and retirement plan. When Connecticut finally legalized civil union in 2005, they obtained a license and renewed their vows before a Justice of the Peace. When Connecticut legalized same-sex marriage in 2009, they once again stood before Justice of the Peace. Life changed and they now wish to dissolve the relationship, which means they must obtain a divorce.

Okay. Now consider the opposite-sex couple who have lived together for 20 years. They discussed the possibility of marriage more than once and each time, opted not to walk down the aisle. Every day of those 20 years, they had the right to marry, yet they chose not to exercise that option.

The central difference between the 2 hypothetical couples is that the opposite-sex couple had a choice to marry or simply live together for the entire relationship. The same-sex couple did not.

Under the law, the legal relationship of the same-sex couple began on the date they entered into civil union. Essentially, it ignores 15 of the 20 years they resided together in a committed relationship.

Should that couple?s relationship for the purposes of divorce be considered the date that the had the commitment ceremony or the date their home state legalized same-sex marriage?? I believe the former rather than the latter should apply.

Pottery 20,000 years old found in a Chinese cave

This undated image made available by Science/AAAS shows one of the pottery fragments recovered from a layer dating approximately 20,000 years old in the Xianrendong cave in south China?s Jiangxi province. The discovery makes them the oldest known pottery in the world, archaeologists say. The findings, which will appear in the journal Science on Friday, June 29, 2012 add to recent efforts that have dated pottery piles in east Asia to more than 15,000 years ago, refuting conventional theories that the invention of pottery correlates to the period about 10,000 years ago when humans moved from being hunter/gathers to farming. (AP Photo/Science/AAAS)

BEIJING (AP) ? Pottery fragments found in a south China cave have been confirmed to be 20,000 years old, making them the oldest known pottery in the world, archaeologists say.

The findings, which will appear in the journal Science on Friday, add to recent efforts that have dated pottery piles in east Asia to more than 15,000 years ago, refuting conventional theories that the invention of pottery correlates to the period about 10,000 years ago when humans moved from being hunter-gathers to farmers.

The research by a team of Chinese and American scientists also pushes the emergence of pottery back to the last ice age, which might provide new explanations for the creation of pottery, said Gideon Shelach, chair of the Louis Frieberg Center for East Asian Studies at The Hebrew University in Israel.

"The focus of research has to change," Shelach, who is not involved in the research project in China, said by telephone.

In an accompanying Science article, Shelach wrote that such research efforts "are fundamental for a better understanding of socio-economic change (25,000 to 19,000 years ago) and the development that led to the emergency of sedentary agricultural societies."

He said the disconnection between pottery and agriculture as shown in east Asia might shed light on specifics of human development in the region.

Wu Xiaohong, professor of archaeology and museology at Peking University and the lead author of the Science article that details the radiocarbon dating efforts, told The Associated Press that her team was eager to build on the research.

"We are very excited about the findings. The paper is the result of efforts done by generations of scholars," Wu said. "Now we can explore why there was pottery in that particular time, what were the uses of the vessels, and what role they played in the survival of human beings."

The ancient fragments were discovered in the Xianrendong cave in south China's Jiangxi province, which was excavated in the 1960s and again in the 1990s, according to the journal article.

Wu, a chemist by training, said some researchers had estimated that the pieces could be 20,000 years old, but that there were doubts.

"We thought it would be impossible because the conventional theory was that pottery was invented after the transition to agriculture that allowed for human settlement."

But by 2009, the team ? which includes experts from Harvard and Boston universities ? was able to calculate the age of the pottery fragments with such precision that the scientists were comfortable with their findings, Wu said.

"The key was to ensure the samples we used to date were indeed from the same period of the pottery fragments," she said.

That became possible when the team was able to determine the sediments in the cave were accumulated gradually without disruption that might have altered the time sequence, she said.

Scientists took samples, such as bones and charcoal, from above and below the ancient fragments in the dating process, Wu said.

"This way, we can determine with precision the age of the fragments, and our results can be recognized by peers," Wu said.

Shelach said he found the process done by Wu's team to be meticulous and that the cave had been well protected throughout the research.

The same team in 2009 published an article in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, in which they determined the pottery fragments found in south China's Hunan province to be 18,000 years old, Wu said.

"The difference of 2,000 years might not be significant in itself, but we always like to trace everything to its earliest possible time," Wu said. "The age and location of pottery fragments help us set up a framework to understand the dissemination of the artifacts and the development of human civilization."

Microsoft buying Internet startup Yammer for $1.2B - KansasCity.com

Microsoft is buying Internet startup Yammer for $1.2 billion in an attempt to bring Facebook-like sharing features to its widely used suite of business software applications.

Yammer specializes in creating private social networks so employees within the same company can keep tabs on what colleagues are working on. That's similar to how Facebook's online social network allows friends and families to track what's happening in each other's personal lives. The deal, announced Monday, comes nearly two weeks after word of Microsoft's negotiations with Yammer first leaked out in published reports. The acquisition represents Microsoft's latest attempt to adapt to a major shift in the technology industry, one that is fueling demand for more Internet-connected services and social-networking tools. The upheaval is threatening to marginalize Microsoft Corp., the world's largest software maker, and ultimately diminish the amount of money coming in from sales of its Windows operating system and a wide range of applications designed primarily for personal computers. As part of its effort to remain relevant, Microsoft paid $8.5 billion last year for Internet video chat service Skype in the largest acquisition in its history. In another bold move, Microsoft last week unveiled its own tablet computer, Surface, to compete with Apple Inc.'s iPad. Microsoft has designed Surface to run on the upcoming Windows 8, the biggest change to the company's operating system in nearly two decades.Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer is counting on Yammer's sharing tools to ensure that long-established Microsoft applications, including its word processing and spreadsheet programs, remain vital components for getting work done. Google Inc. has emerged as a threat with a toolbox of similar programs that run primarily over the Internet rather than on individual machines."Think of Yammer as a fundamental part of our Office family," Ballmer said on a Monday conference call.Microsoft will have much of the same autonomy given to Skype since that deal closed eight months ago. Yammer will continue to be run from its San Francisco headquarters by its co-founder and CEO, David Sacks. It will also continue to provide its services separately from Microsoft's offerings.Microsoft did not give a time frame for when the deal should close.Gartner Inc. analyst Larry Cannell said Microsoft's latest acquisition was smart and reflected "a recognition that the social capabilities in Microsoft's products have been deficient."Investors couldn't muster much enthusiasm for the deal on another somber day for the stock market. Microsoft's stock fell 82 cents, or nearly 3 percent, to close at $29.88.Although other companies such as Jive Software Inc. and Salesforce.com Inc. are building social networks for businesses, Yammer shares the most DNA with Facebook Inc.When it started in 2008, Yammer raised its initial funding from Peter Thiel - Facebook's first major investor. Thiel formerly worked with Sacks while they were both executives at PayPal, an online payment service that eBay Inc. bought for $1.5 billion in 2002.Sean Parker, the former Facebook president depicted by Justin Timberlake in the 2010 movie "The Social Network," also sits on Yammer's board of directors. Parker still owns a 4.6 percent stake in Facebook currently worth about $2.2 billion.Microsoft has its own financial ties to Facebook, having invested $240 million in the social network in 2007. After selling $250 million in stock in Facebook's initial public offering last month, Microsoft still retains a 1.7 percent stake worth about $840 million.Yammer has relied largely on word of mouth to attract more than 5 million registered users at more than 200,000 companies worldwide. The service depends on employees to use its free tools to set up a private network within their company. Once the network is getting wide usage, Yammer then tries to sell more sophisticated features to the companies. As a privately held company, Yammer hasn't disclosed its revenue. In a Monday note about the Microsoft deal, Nomura Securites analyst Rick Sherlund estimated Yammer's revenue at $15 million to $20 million last year. The company has been expanding so rapidly that it had been considered a prime candidate to pursue an IPO by next year. The stock of Yammer rival Jive Software has gained 65 percent since it went public six months ago, though it fell 74 cents Monday to close at $19.75.The IPO market has gone into a deep freeze since Facebook flopped in its closely watching stock market debut last month. Instead of soaring as had been widely anticipated, Facebook shares plummeted during the first few weeks of trading. Although the stock has rallied recently, it remains 16 percent below the IPO price of $38, which had minted Facebook Inc. with a market value of $104 billion. Facebook shares dropped 99 cents, or 3 percent, Monday to close at $32.06.Sacks said the frosty conditions in the IPO market didn't influence Yammer's decision to sell to Microsoft. The negotiations between the two companies began before Facebook's IPO, according to Saks and Ballmer."Our thinking was based on the fit with Microsoft and the fact that we think Microsoft is a great partner for us in expanding the service and taking it to the next level," Sacks said. The sale will provide a hefty return for Yammer's early backers. The startup has raised about $142 million in venture capital.

Getting Your Personal Finance In Order | LumiJet

Knowing how to properly manage personal finances is not a skill that people are naturally born with. To get the most out of your money, and manage your finances in a way that protects your financial security, takes a lot of education and learning. The knowledge contained in this article is designed to help you better manage your personal finances.

Cash Advance

Regardless of how tempting they may seem, do not borrow any money from a cash advance lender. While it might solve your problem on a temporary basis, many times they lead you deeper into debt. The interest rates they charge make the transactions more of a pain than a pleasure.

You should never take advantage of the online cash advance options offered by just about every credit card issuer. By steering clear of this method of obtaining a quick infusion of cash, you can avoid the exorbitant interest rates that such features generally carry.

If you can help it, never use your credit card to obtain a cash advance. Most credit card companies charge exorbitant interest rates on cash advances, and the interest will begin to accrue immediately. This service should be used only in the most dire financial emergency, in order to avoid greater problems.

Never withdraw a cash advance from your credit card. This option only rears its head when you are desperate for cash. There are always better ways to get it. Cash advances should be avoided because they incur a different, higher interest rate than regular charges to your card. Cash advance interest is often one of the highest rates your card offers.

As was mentioned earlier, people are not born knowing how to properly manage their personal finances. Successful financial management is a skill that is learned. Read this article several times to take in all of the information that it contains, and then apply what you?ve learned to your own situation and see how it can improve your life.

Cartilage regeneration for bone and joint repair is closer for patients, researchers say

ScienceDaily (June 26, 2012) ? A group of biomedical engineering researchers have cited recent advances in implantable sensor technology and cartilage scaffolding systems as major developments in the use of engineered cartilage for bone and joint repair.

These advances could mean help for the vast number of patients suffering from damaged joints and osteoarthritis -- the most common form of arthritis that affects millions of people worldwide.

Newer, smaller sensing devices that more accurately measure stress loads on joints are giving researchers testing newly grown engineered cartilage within a joint a better understanding of the healing process. Armed with these data, doctors could advise patients on safer, more beneficial levels of activity following joint surgery.

The sensors also transmit their measurements wirelessly, enabling patients undergoing cartilage growth therapy to monitor their own joint stress loads in real time. The advances appear this month in the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

The article appears in the June 2012 issue of the journal, which publishes research focused on improving the care of patients with musculoskeletal disorders. The article is a review that describes advances in the monitoring of implantable sensors for orthopaedic applications.

Accurately measuring the loads within a repaired joint helps determine smarter ways to get joints to heal, said article co-author John Szivek, professor in the department of orthopaedic surgery at the University of Arizona and director of the UA Orthopedic Research Laboratory in Tucson, Ariz. Szivek also chairs the UA Biomedical Engineering Graduate Interdisciplinary Program.

Szivek said he's been published with a very elite group of researchers in this particular area of biomedical engineering. "There are only a handful of research groups in the world doing this type of work, and my lab is the only one in the world collecting direct measurements from native tissues," he said.

The group is a collaboration of researchers from four universities. Co-authors Ledet and Wachs are from the department of biomedical engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y. D'Lima is from the department of molecular and experimental medicine at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, Calif., and Westerhoff and Bergmann are from the Julius Wolff Institut, Charit? University of Medicine, Berlin, Germany.

"It's a stroke of genius to combine tissue engineering and improved implant measurement technology," said Jennifer Barton, head of the UA biomedical engineering department. "No one really knew what the specific loads were on these joints before this," she said.

Monitoring and recording the pressures involved in different patient activities decreases rehabilitation time and allows patients to heal more consistently without damaging themselves during rehab or after they have healed. Szivek said the ultimate goal is to house the transmitters on a single small computer chip about one third the size of a dime. These new chip-based transmitters would wirelessly transmit patient activity, including reporting the recent history of various loads on a repaired joint. Patients could also monitor their own healing via the sensor's wireless reporting to a smartphone app.

"The idea of having a device that's designed specifically for a patient, tied to a system that provides dynamic feedback directly to that patient, has tremendous possibilities," Barton said.

Another advance in the ability of researchers to successfully use cartilage growth for joint repair is the use of computerized tomography, or CT, scans, which are computer-generated medical images used in the diagnosis of tumors and cancer. The 3-D images produced by CT scans are now being used to create patient-specific implantable scaffold systems that support joint cartilage while the tissue grows and gains strength.

Using a 3-D scan of a patient's joint to custom build an implantable scaffold to support new cartilage growth -- as well as an implanted sensor that provides real-time activity monitoring for the rehabilitated patient -- represent major milestones in cartilage tissue engineering.

"This group has developed a methodology for building an implant that's closer to the native tissue than anything that has been made before," Barton said.

Why the Supreme Court ruling on immigration is a clear rebuke to Arizona

Both sides of the immigration debate claim victory, but the court not only accepted virtually all of the Obama administration?s arguments, it also rejected Arizona?s primary contention that local police have 'inherent' authority to enforce federal immigration laws.

By Ben Winograd / June 26, 2012

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer speaks to the media about the Supreme Court decision on the Arizona immigration law, SB 1070, June 25 in Phoenix. Op-ed contributor Ben Winograd says that 'regardless of what Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer or other supporters of the law might say, Monday?s ruling...provides a clear sign that states have little, if any, leeway to enact laws like SB 1070.'

Monday?s mixed Supreme Court decision on the Arizona immigration law has allowed both sides to claim victory. But make no mistake: The court?s ruling represents a stinging rebuke for supporters of SB 1070 and other state immigration laws.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "off"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

The majority opinion not only accepted virtually all of the Obama administration?s legal arguments, it also rejected Arizona?s primary contention that local police have ?inherent? authority to enforce the immigration laws. And while the court permitted one part of SB 1070 to go into effect, it effectively invited future litigants to challenge its application in court.

Thus, regardless of what Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer or other supporters of the law might say, Monday?s ruling ? which was written by Justice Anthony Kennedy and joined by Chief Justice John Roberts, both Republican appointees ? provides a clear sign that states have little, if any, leeway to enact laws like SB 1070. (Although the final vote was 5-3, the margin would have likely been 6-3 had Justice Elena Kagan not recused herself.)

Contrary to popular belief, the question before the justices was not whether Arizona?s law violated the Constitution, but whether it conflicted with federal law. Of the four sections under consideration, the court found three were indeed ?preempted? by Congress.

One of the provisions blocked by the court, Section 3, made it a crime under state law for immigrants to fail to carry ?registration? papers issued by the federal government. Another, Section 5(C), made it a crime for immigrants without employment authorization documents to seek or perform work in Arizona. A third, Section 6, gave local police authority to arrest immigrants ? including those with green cards ? for having previously committed an offense making them removable from the country.

While the legal rationale varied for each section, the majority struck down all three provisions upon finding them to violate federal law or otherwise disrupt the framework created by Congress. (In a partially dissenting opinion, Justice Samuel Alito said that he, too, believed that Section 3 should be overturned.)

The only provision to survive Monday?s ruling was Section 2(B), which requires Arizona police to try to determine the immigration status of people they stop or arrest if ?reasonable suspicion? exists that the person in custody is unlawfully present. (The provision received extensive media attention due to widespread concerns that it could invite racial profiling.)

Facebook's help page for those who find their accounts in a "Special Memorialized State."

By Suzanne Choney

It's not that Facebook is trying to tell you something even though it might seem that way: Still, at least one user is puzzled by what happens when he logs into the social network, only to be greeted by a notice that his account cannot be accessed and is in a "special memorial state."

That's what happened to user Brett Millett, who shared his experience on a Q & A site under the heading, "Someone memorialized my Facebook profile but I'm still alive!":

Apparently, it?s pretty easy to memorialize someone's Facebook profile. I am greeted with the following message after entering my valid and correct username and password:

"Account Inaccessible This account is in a special memorial state. If you have any questions or concerns, please visit the Help Center for further information."

Millett, whom TODAY.com has contacted but not yet heard from, also wrote that he suspects the mishap may be due to some mischievous pals. "Apparently, you need my date of birth (which friends or friends with hacked accounts have access to) and a fake obituary (because no one at Facebook really reads them apparently)."

A frustrated Millett said that the "best part" was that he couldn't "actually contact them in any expedited way to protest. In fact, I sent an email to get a bunch of useless links that I'd already looked at."

There is help, but you have to know where to look. Here's where you would start, according to Facebook. And to report someone as having passed away, you'd need to go to this page.

We asked Facebook to explain how what happened to Millett could happen.

"It was really a case of human error" on Facebook's side, a spokesman told TODAY.com. "It was a mistake by (someone) on our user operations team." Facebook, he said, does have "checks that are in place" to prevent such a botch, but still ? it happened.

Millett's Facebook account, the spokesman said, "has now been remediated" ? put back in order, so that Millett is no longer "memorialized."

In general, when the social network gets a report that a user has passed away, the site memorializes the account, restricting profile and search privacy to friends only. It also leaves the profile up so that friends and family members can leave remembrance posts.

Facebook's "Report a Deceased Person's Profile" page.

For an account to be memorialized, the person reporting the death has to provide proof of it, such as an obituary or news article, as part of the reporting form Facebook requests.

>>> overseas tonight decidedly mixed emotions in egypt after this weekend's news that mohamed morsi of the muslim brotherhood was officially declared the winner of that country's first democratic presidential election. this means big changes in egypt and beyond especially in that region. our chief foreign correspondent richard engel joins us again tonight from tar hrir square. people are just coming to grips with how momentous this really is.

>> reporter: certainly big changes could be ahead. supporters of the muslim brotherhood mohamed morsi are still here in the square celebrating, playing music, hoping this will be the start of a new, islamic state in the middle east . what an incredible change of events. when this revolution began a year and a half ago, in this square, mohamed morsi was behind bars. today morsi was touring president mubarak 's old office, even sitting down in his old chair testing it out for size. critics say that the rise of the muslim brotherhood to power will be absolutely disastrous for this country, turning egypt certainly anti-israeli and perhaps anti-american as well. brian? all right. all of that will deserve watching over the coming days. richard engel , thanks.

Lightroom 4 finally floats into Adobe's Creative Cloud

Adobe's primary tool for tweaking and organizing photos was always destined to be part of the Creative Cloud offering, but for whatever reason it didn't make it in time for launch. As of today though, Lightroom 4 is available to download on PC or 64-bit Mac (or both, since you're allowed multiple installations) as part of a CS6 monthly license. The additional title may not be enough to sway cloud doubters, but even they can't dispute that the subscription approach now delivers more software than the full-on $2599 shrink-wrapped Master Collection.

Negotiations for Success ? Chinese Negotiation Styles | The Secrets ...

In today is business world the art of negotiation is what sets apart the successful from the unsuccessful. The negotiation can be a simple talk over a pay raise all the way up to the very complex negotiations of a business acquisition. To put it shortly there are thousands if not hundreds of thousands of negotiations done every year! To succeed one will need a powerful business negotiation strategy. Chinese negotiation styles are just that and in this article you will be systematically shown a wide variety of different Chinese negotiation styles. These styles will not only make you look like the better businessman but also the more financially successful.

The first and most basic form of Chinese negotiation styles is the cutthroat variant. In this style you are only looking out for one person, yourself. If you are working this style you will need to have a very aggressive attitude when making a deal and not looking to compromise in even the slightest extent. If you do not get what you are looking for you are expected to walk away. This Chinese negotiation style is best suited for business acquisitions on businesses that may be going under or are in a financial crisis. They would need you so there is little room for them to negotiate anyways.

If you are planning to make a long lasting relationship with whoever you are working with then a cooperative style might do you well. This Chinese negotiation style could specifically be used when you are negotiating a business merger where both parties must get something equal in return. You are not looking to gain any more than the person or group you are negotiating with; in fact you are trying to give them an amount that seems equal to what you have.

A boss, CEO, or even a manager might need to play the role of an accommodator. In this role you are giving the person you are negotiating with the feeling as if they have gotten something more out of the negotiation. This may seem like a style to avoid however; this style is great when you are working with lower level to midlevel employees. If a key player on your team wants a raise and he has an offer to work somewhere else then a raise might do him well to stay. You are accommodating this person but at the same time you are keeping your business in track by not losing him.

To conclude we see that there are many different Chinese negotiation styles but what is most important is that we find one that works for the current situation. If you are looking to get nothing but gain then the cutthroat style may be for you, a cooperative style will keep things fair for both sides, and finally an accommodator style is something better for the long run. Regardless of the style you pick the Chinese negotiation styles are simply the most powerful and best way to get you and your business going!

Program Helps Young Cancer Survivor's Classmates Understand ...

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) ? When a child has a major illness, the focus is on making sure they recover. But once they?re well, the transition back to everyday life can be a challenge. Classmates don?t always know how to react when a child returns to school, but the school re-entry program works to make that process easier.

It wasn?t long ago when cancer kept Julia Kauth from fully enjoying her life. Now an active 7-year-old, Julia has recovered from a rare form of kidney cancer.

?All of it, overall, was extremely difficult,? said Torey Kauth, Julia?s father.

One unexpected challenge of the healing process came when Julia became the center of unwanted attention when she returned to school.

?They would say I kind of looked like a boy,? Julia said.

To help her fellow students understand her illness, Julia relied on the Children?s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota?s school re-entry program. Vicky Neis, a child life specialist, went to Julia?s class to answer questions about her cancer.

Neis said she explained to the schoolchildren that cancer is not contagious and that kids with cancer did nothing wrong to get it.

?They told everyone what I was going to be doing, and it happens to other kids,? Julia said.

Now in its twentieth year, the program has grown much. Last year, it helped 104 kids.

?I think it?s demystifying, in a way that?s positive, is really helpful,? Neis said.

When Julia heads back to class in the fall, she knows she won?t be a distraction.

?They don?t ask questions about me anymore, and they don?t stare at me,? Julia said.

Part of the education the program gives focuses on the child?s friends. It encourages them to take on the burden of answering questions if their friend doesn?t feel up to it.

The Children?s School Re-Entry Program is funded by Great Clips. From now until Friday, Great Clips stores in Minnesota and Wisconsin will donate a portion of the proceeds from every haircut. To learn more about the program, go to the Children?s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota website.

Channing Tatum Denies He Stole 'Magic Mike' Stripper Moves

'We created everything from a fictional place,' Tatum says, responding to allegations by former stripper co-workers.
By Jocelyn Vena

Channing Tatum is reacting to a group of male dancers who allege that the actor quite literally stole their moves for his new movie, "Magic Mike," which takes place in the shirtless world of male strippers.

Two male dancers, Thomas "Awesome" Austin and London Steele, who danced with Tatum while he was a stripper in Florida, told TMZ last week that the experiences in the film, and even Tatum's character's name (Magic Mike), are all their own. Austin told the website, "He only danced for four months. How many events could have happened to him?" He added that even Tatum's move in the film, the Hot Seat, is all his own.

Director Steven Soderbergh has said that the film is loosely based on Tatum's experiences as a male dancer. And in a new interview, Tatum is opening up about the claims against him.

"Those guys have been trying to make money off of me since I got into this business," Tatum told reporters, according to The Hollywood Reporter. "Look, there's nothing that's factual in this whole movie other than that I was an 18-year-old kid and went into this world and I dropped out of college from playing football and was living on my sister's couch. There's not one character that I took from my real life; this is just a world that I went into, and I had a perspective on. And we created everything from a fictional place."

"Magic Mike" opens Friday, and Tatum is going into opening week with no ill will for his former co-workers. "I don't want to say anything bad about them because they're part of the reason why I think this world is so interesting," he said. "They're very interesting, intriguing and bizarre characters, and I'm thankful for weird people out there. They're some of the most creative people."

The June 29 film release also stars "True Blood" actor Joe Manganiello, "White Collar" star Matt Bomer and Matthew McConaughey.

In an interview with MTV News, Tatum recalled how the film came out of a conversation he had with Soderbergh. "I was having a beer with Soderbergh — we were doing a movie together — and I told him about [my past stripping]," he said. "I'd been doing it for eight months of my life when I was, like, 18 or 19, and he said, 'We gotta make a movie out of that.' And I was like, 'Why? Why do we need to do that?' And he said, 'I've never seen that world on film before.' And then we really started talking about that, and we thought it would be really hilarious but still grounded in reality."

Check out everything we've got on "Magic Mike."

Issue Viewing Character

Alright, not sure if this is the right place, but I figure it is the HELP section. If I get chastised for asking here erroneously, something is wrong. Anywho, as I said above, I'm having trouble with everyone being unable to view my character - myself included. Here's the link to said character: http://www.roleplaygateway.com/roleplay/a-tale-of-seven-children/characters/kane-o%e2%80%99reilly/

I believe the main part of the issue is that I included an apostrophe ['] in the last name - That being, O'Reilly. I'm working on the assumption that there isn't coding in place to substitute or alter the apostrophe into something functioning for a webpage name, which is therefore preventing a viable link from being created to view the character. I can still access the character's information by editing, since that uses a character ID rather then name, but still, since I can't change the name, no one else can see it. I've used OOC for the moment to share the character around, and would be happy with a simple name change fix, but I figure this is something that should probably be addressed to some degree.

If I'm in the wrong place, I apologise, and would be grateful for a redirection. Additionally, the above is a hypothesis, not a fact - It's quite possible the character won't load for other reasons. Anywho, there's no real rush, but a response would be pretty cool to know what the plan and such is. Either way, I thank you for looking into my inquiry, and hope it doesn't cause too much trouble.

Regards,
Tanman.

EDIT: Additionally, my browser is the latest version of firefox, though I doubt it's an issue with that, seeing as I can load everything else juuussssttt fine.

Car refinancing is a sensible choice for those who own a car but are having trouble paying the monthly payments. In light of the financial crisis that has rocked the global economy many people are struggling to meet their monthly repayments and other high interest charges. Auto refinancing can help those in financial trouble, especially when borrowers are anxious about refinancing their mortgage. But what does auto refinancing mean? Well, instead of paying high interest rates on loans, borrowers can opt for a lower one by setting up a new loan against the value of their vehicle. It is important to note that with this solution, cars lose value quickly, so it could happen that a borrower pays more interest on the loan in the long run.

Once someone is approved by an auto refinancing company, the borrower

The world population is over seven billion and all of these people need feeding. However, the energy requirement of a species depends not only on numbers but on its average mass. New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal BMC Public Health has estimated the total mass of the human population, defined its distribution by region, and the proportion of this biomass due to the overweight and obesity.

Up to half of all food eaten is burned up in physical activity. Increasing mass means higher energy requirements, because it takes more energy to move a heavy body. Even at rest a bigger body burns more energy.

Using data from the United Nations and World Health Organization, researchers from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine estimated that the adult human population weights in at 287 million tonnes. 15 millions of which is due to the overweight and 3.5 million due to obesity.

While the average body mass globally was 62kg, North America, which has the highest body mass of any continent, with an average body mass of 80.7kg. North America has only 6% of the world's population but 34% of the world's biomass mass due to obesity. In contrast Asia has 61% of the world's population but only 13% of the world's biomass due to obesity.

If all countries had the same average BMI as the USA the total human biomass would increase by 58 million tonnes - this is the equivalent of an additional 935 million people of world average body mass.

Explaining the implications of this study Sarah Walpole said, "Our results emphasize the importance of looking at biomass rather than just population numbers when considering the ecological impact of a species, especially humans."

This study was based on the 2005 WHO SURF report so it is an underestimate of the current situation. The world's population is continuing to increase in size the UN predicts that by 2050 there could be 8.9 billion people on the planet.

Prof Ian Roberts, continued, "Everyone accepts that population growth threatens global environmental sustainability our study shows that population fatness is also a major threat. Unless we tackle both population and fatness - our chances are slim."

(AP) ? Greeks voted Sunday for the second time in six weeks in what was arguably their country's most critical election in 40 years, with the country's treasured place within the European Union's joint currency in the balance.

The political turmoil sparked by a two-year financial crisis has roiled markets across the world, with fears that victory by parties that have vowed to cancel the country's international bailout agreements and accompanying austerity measures could see Greece forced out of the euro.

That in turn would likely drag down other financially troubled countries and rip apart the euro itself.

The last opinion polls published before a two-week pre-election ban showed the radical left Syriza party of Alexis Tsipras running neck-and-neck with the conservative New Democracy party of Antonis Samaras. But no party is likely to win enough votes to form a government on its own, meaning a coalition will have to be formed to avoid yet another election.

The results of exit surveys were expected at the close of polling stations at 7 p.m. (1600 GMT) Sunday, and the first official projections were expected at around 9:30 p.m. (1830 GMT). Strong winds in the Greek archipelago forced the cancellation of some ferry routes, raising doubts about whether some voters would be able to get to islands with polling stations in time.

Inconclusive elections on May 6 resulted in no party winning enough votes to form a government, and coalition talks collapsed after 10 days. The vote, which also sent the formerly governing socialist PASOK party plunging to historic lows, sent a very clear message that Greeks have lost patience with the deep austerity imposed in return for the country receiving billions of euros (dollars) in rescue loans from other eurozone countries and the International Monetary Fund.

"I'd like to see something change for the country in general, including regarding the bailout," said Vassilis Stergiou, an early-morning voter at an Athens polling station. "But at least for us to get organized and at the very least do something."

Tsipras, a 37-year-old former student activist, has vowed to rip up Greece's bailout agreements and repeal the austerity measures, which have included deep spending cuts on everything from health care to education and infrastructure, as well as tax hikes and reductions of salaries and pensions.

But his pledges, which include canceling planned privatizations, nationalizing banks and rolling back cuts to minimum wages and pensions, have horrified European leaders, as well as many Greeks. Tsipras' opponents argue that the inexperienced young politician is out of touch with reality, and that his policies will force the country out of the euro and lead to poverty for years to come.

Virtually unknown outside of Greece four months ago, Tsipras' pledges and his party's strong showing in the May 6 elections, where he came a surprise second place and quadrupled his support since the 2009 election, has put him in the international spotlight.

Scores of journalists and television news crews from across the world jostled for space to cover Tsipras casting his ballot in an Athens polling center.

"We have beaten fear. Today we open a road to hope," he said after voting, adding that he was confident of victory.

"Today we open a road to a better tomorrow, with our people united, dignified and proud. In a Greece of social justice and prosperity, an equal member of a Europe that is changing. A Europe of the peoples and of solidarity."

The young left-wing leader has accused his rivals of attempting to terrorize the population by casting him as the man who will ruin the country, and insists he will keep Greece within the euro ? something that repeated opinion polls have shown about 80 percent of Greeks want.

Greece has been dependent on the rescue loans since May 2010, after sky-high borrowing rates left it locked out of the international markets following years of profligate spending and falsifying financial data.

The spending cuts made in return have left the country mired in a fifth year of recession, with unemployment spiraling to above 22 percent and tens of thousands of businesses shutting down.

For his part, Samaras has cast Sunday's choice as one between the euro and returning to the country's old currency, the drachma. Although he voted against Greece's first bailout in 2010, when his party was in opposition, he backed the second bailout agreed on late last year. He has vowed to renegotiate some of the terms of the accompanying austerity, but insists the top priority is for the country to remain in Europe's joint currency.

"The main thing we will decide on is the dilemma, euro or drachma," he said during his final pre-election rally in central Athens on Friday.

European leaders have cautioned that Greece could be left outside the 17-nation eurozone if it pulls out of its bailout commitments.

Newly elected French President Francois Hollande warned in a Greek television interview earlier this week that "if the impression is given that the Greeks want to move away from the commitments that were taken and abandon all prospects of revival, then there will be countries in the Eurozone that will want to end the presence of Greece in the eurozone."

Nearly 10 million people are eligible to vote in the country of about 11 million people. Polls close at 7pm (1600 GMT), with official results expected a few hours later.

"Today the Greek people speak. Tomorrow a new era for Greece begins," Samaras said after casting his ballot in a small town in southern Greece, the first of the main politicians to do so.

As Greeks went to the polls, more than 250 firefighters and soldiers battled a fire raging south of the Greek capital since Saturday afternoon. Local authorities said several houses were burned. Gale-force winds were hampering the efforts to extinguish the blaze, and Greece asked for help in water-dropping planes from Italy, France and Croatia.

Three firefighters suffered burns on Saturday, while four people were arrested for allegedly starting the fire by accident during welding work at a construction site.
