HOUSTON ? The four astronauts assigned to NASA's last space shuttle flight can't seem to escape all the fuss and hubbub.

With just eight days until Atlantis blasts off, the astronauts said Thursday they're still getting last-minute requests. Relatives, acquaintances and special-interest groups are all clamoring for launch tickets. And just about everyone wants the astronauts to take something of theirs on the last shuttle ride.

"People are procrastinators, right? You've always wanted to go see a shuttle launch, and all of a sudden, it's the last one," astronaut Sandra Magnus said in an interview with The Associated Press. "But it's really nice to see all the enthusiasm."

At a news conference, commander Christopher Ferguson said there's so much hoopla surrounding this last mission that he can't wait to go into quarantine Friday. Shuttle crews always take up residence at Johnson Space Center in Houston a week before liftoff to avoid germs.

Ferguson and his crew will fly on the Fourth of July to Kennedy Space Center in Florida, where they'll remain in quarantine. Liftoff is set for 11:26 a.m. next Friday for the 12-day delivery mission to the International Space Station.

Ferguson said he'll use the peace of quarantine to gather his thoughts, take some notes and do all the things that got lost in the excitement of the mission.

"Looking forward to a little bit of quiet time," he told reporters.

Even before the hourlong news conference began, photographers crowded the stage where Ferguson and his crewmates ? all dressed in dark suits ? sat at a long podium. Ferguson pulled out his cellphone and recorded a half-minute of video of the onslaught.

The commander said even though the 30-year shuttle program is ending he's not hoping for any launch delays that would stretch it out.

"Eight days away, it just sounds so final," he said in response to a reporter's question. "We're ready. We're trained."

Co-pilot Douglas Hurley said the astronauts have the easy part, sitting on the rocket and launching.

"It's real tough on your family and friends," he said.

Astronaut Rex Walheim said the crew has been bombarded with requests for NASA passes to see the launch up close from within Kennedy Space Center. Each astronaut got 330 tickets to dole out.

Veterans have put in requests, as well as sick children. Plus there are all the family, friends, co-workers, even casual acquaintances. Walheim said it hasn't been easy, but they did their best to be fair.

The astronauts also have had to be pickier than usual about what personal souvenirs can take up on this last flight. They can't possibly carry up everything that everyone would like, so they're sticking to the typical handful of medallions, flags, banners, jewelry charms and the like.

Atlantis' journey to the space station, with a full load of food and other supplies, will mark the 135th shuttle flight.

The plan to retire NASA's three surviving shuttles was made seven years ago, a year after the Columbia tragedy. That was so NASA could focus on expeditions to outer space. The goal is to send astronauts to an asteroid or Mars, while private companies take over cargo and astronaut trips to the space station.

"It hurts to let the space shuttle go," Ferguson told the AP. "But we understand that in order to take steps farther, that we're going to have to take a break here for a little while."

One day I hurt my foot, so I cannot run in these days. But I am not going to listen to the God. Therefore I determined to jog to increase the energy of my legs. So as long as he doesn't rush quickly I usually can keep up.

They grew up in a culturally diverse school and play environment, are tech-savvy, enthusiastic,?confident, well networked and achievement-oriented. Millennials are the best educated generation in history.

Thanks to mobile technology their very attentive ?helicopter parents? were rarely out of reach. Their parents?introduced them to almost constant education and?well supervised activities. Their busy schedules and expanded educational opportunities are the root of their confidence and need for variety and challenge.

Millennials?have been told?by their parents that they can do anything. They?re often called the ?Everybody Gets a Trophy? generation because their parents? insisted that their childhood experiences be positive (everyone wins), and?that everyone has a valid opinion and deserves to be?heard.

Employment Expectations
Millennials?do not expect to ?pay their dues.??They are not shy and expect?their opinions to?be?heard. They want to know they have access to an open door to ask questions. Millennials?want?to know their work is?valuable to the company and / or environment? as well as to them and their career. They are driven less by money and more by accomplishment? for now at least.

Millennials want to express their creativity and be able to complete tasks?using their own methods.? They are learning-oriented and if they?re doing something wrong they want to know about it now so they can learn from it, but will not dwell on failure (because everyone wins).

Just like when they were young,?Millennials?like working in teams and being?coached, need lots of praise and need to?be told often they are on the right track and doing a great job.

Work Ethic / Loyalty
Millennials need detailed instruction about what you want ? but let them determine how to get there. Make the work relevant and important to them and the company. If you engage them the right way?they will be loyal and work hard. If they?re not satisfied they will quit now and find that job later ? and if that doesn?t work out they can?get support from?their helicopter parents.

Millennials?are accustomed to new ideas and situations, a constant opportunity to learn (or more accurately find out).

Praise Millennials?often ? daily even? and for sure? coach them.

Obama dives into debt talks (AFP)

WASHINGTON (AFP) ? The White House accused Republicans of siding with billionaires and private jet owners, as President Barack Obama waded into political talks designed to avert a "calamitous" US debt default.

Obama met the top Democrat in the Senate and his minority Republican counterpart, seeking to unpick a deadlock over his call on lawmakers to lift the $14.29 trillion debt ceiling by an August 2 deadline.

As political tensions rose, the White House warned of "calamitous" consequences to the global economy if the talks do not seal an agreement and Washington is forced into default and runs out of money to pay its bills.

"It's very important that we don't play chicken here, that we don't test the markets," White House spokesman Jay Carney said.

But Republicans, who quit talks with the White House last week accusing Obama of pushing tax hikes, again demanded big spending cuts in return for agreeing to lift the debt limit.

In the United States, Congress has to agree to lifting the cap on government borrowing, and has done so repeatedly in recent years at the urging of successive Democratic and Republican presidents.

But this time, congressional Republicans elected in a backlash against government, and on a platform of sweeping spending cuts in last November's mid-term polls, are demanding big concessions from the White House.

Carney told reporters the president emerged from his meeting with Senate Democratic Majority leader Harry Reid convinced a "significant deal remains possible."

He said the administration had shown it was ready for tough choices and challenged Obama's foes to stop shielding "millionaires and billionaires" and to take on "some of their sacred cows."

"Do we perpetuate a system that allows for subsidies in revenues for oil and gas, for example, or owners of corporate private jets, and then call for cuts in things like food safety or weather services?" Carney asked.

The White House says Republican budget plans would place the very survival of popular social entitlement programs like Medicare health plans for the elderly at risk.

Republicans claim Obama is motivated by preserving big government programs and wants tax increases which would harm the economy. They are demanding large cuts to the annual deficit, projected to hit $1.6 trillion this year.

Reid said after his talks with Obama that Republicans should join his Democrats and seek a deal, and not look to score points with the ultra-conservative wing of their party with the 2012 presidential election looming.

"I hope my Republican colleagues will put the economy ahead of politics. I hope they'll join us to create jobs and set aside their desire to please the Tea Party and defeat President Obama," Reid said.

Senate Minority leader Mitch McConnell met Obama in the early evening, but both sides declined to provide details of the closed door talks.

A senior aide to McConnell said the two sides would continue talking after the veteran Senate powerbroker had earlier staked out a tough line.

"I'll sit down with President Obama to discuss his request to raise the nation's debt ceiling," McConnell said in a Senate speech.

"When I do, I intend to make a request of my own: I intend to ask the president what he's prepared to do, outside of raising taxes, about the massive deficits and debt that have accumulated on his watch."

The Washington Post meanwhile reported that some Republicans may be open to a compromise that includes cuts in defense spending rather than changes to tax policy.

The US government hit its legal borrowing limit on May 16 and a succession of meetings chaired by Vice President Joe Biden were designed to secure congressional approval to raise the ceiling.

The Treasury, which has performed a number of intricate financial measures since then, says it will run out of maneuvering room on August 2.

Financial rating agencies have warned of a possible downgrade of the top US debt rating without an increase in the debt ceiling.

Norma Lyon, Iowa fair's 'butter cow lady,' dies (AP)

Norma "Duffy" Lyon, whose life-size butter sculptures of cows, Elvis and even Jesus and his disciples delighted Iowa state fairgoers for nearly half a century, has died. She was 81.

Lyon suffered a stroke at her rural home Sunday and died shortly after at a hospital, Michelle Juhl, one of Lyon's nine children, said Monday.

Known to most people as the "butter cow lady," Lyon was pregnant with her seventh child when she produced her first bovine butter sculpture, a 600-pound cow, for the Iowa State Fair in 1959.

The rural Toledo housewife went on to sculpt a butter cow every year until she retired in 2006, and along the way also sculpted the likes of Garth Brooks, a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, Smokey Bear and other images in her 40-degree refrigerated showcase at the fair.

She picked up her penchant for sculpting while earning her veterinary science degree at Iowa State University and helping her husband with the family dairy and beef cattle operation. In the midst of her animal medicine and mammalian anatomy classes, Lyon took two sculpting classes.

The Iowa State Fair has featured a butter cow every year since 1911 as a promotion for dairy products, and Lyon got her start after working briefly under her predecessor, Earl Dutt, whose work didn't overly impress her.

"It was a good farm cow, but it wasn't a show cow," Lyon told The Associated Press in 1999.

While Lyon wasn't the genesis of the butter cow, she did expand the medium during her time as a butter sculptor for the state fair, much to the delight of fairgoers.

She began carving companion pieces in 1984, starting with a horse and foal. In 1996, Lyon recreated Iowa artist Grant Woods' "American Gothic," the famous painting of a stern-faced man and woman with a pitchfork in front of a farm house.

The following year, Lyon suffered a stroke, but recovered in time to sculpt the traditional cow and a 6-foot likeness of Elvis Presley that saw fairgoers lined up around the building that housed it.

In 1999, Lyon took on what was arguably her most ambitious project: Her own rendition of the biblical story of the Last Supper, featuring disciples around a table leaning back on lounge chairs while Jesus stood at the head of the table with his arms stretched out, looking toward the heavens.

Lyon also garnered attention in 2007, when she publicly backed Barack Obama for president and appeared in campaign ads for him.

"She was very patient and kind," said Sarah Pratt, who took over as "the new butter lady" in 2007 after apprenticing under Lyon starting when she was 14 years old. "She loved to tell stories, and she'd laugh and we'd laugh together. She was at her best, I think, when she was sculpting."

Juhl, who was 4 when her mother sculpted her first butter cow for the fair, doesn't remember a time when her mother wasn't the "butter cow lady." But she does remember getting to travel to Des Moines for the fair.

"Mainly because we got to stay at a motel and eat out," Juhl said. "Coming from a family of nine kids, we didn't get to do that very often."

Lyon is survived by her husband, G. Joe Lyon, her nine children, 23 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

UCC?s Atheist Society is expected to hold a counter-demonstration against protesters expected to converge on UCC today in protest at a controversial exhibition which depicts the Virgin Mary dressed in a bikini and held up by nude angels.

The Atheist Society says that its protest also aims to highlight the ongoing effect of Ireland?s blasphemy laws, which were passed despite complaints that they risked putting Ireland back in the ?dark ages?.

The Society said that the laws pose a danger to free speech in Ireland.

The Defamation Act 2009 makes blasphemy a crime punishable by a ?25,000 fine. The legislation defines blasphemy as any ?matter that is grossly abusive or insulting in relation to matters held sacred by any religion, thereby causing outrage among a substantial number of the adherents of that religion? with safeguards to make it harder to prosecute.?

The legislation has not thusfar been used in many prosecutions, however, and commentators have speculated that its real-life application may be confined to prosecuting cases of hate-speech.

The society?s press release said that it was wrong for ?any modern democracy to have blasphemy laws? as part of its legislation.

The Society also noted that recent attempts by Islamic states to make blasphemy a crime of international law had been met with a cold reception, with Ireland joining other EU states in voting against the controversial proposals.

The Atheist Society?s demonstration takes place outside the main gates of UCC (Western Rd) from 2:00 ? 5:30pm tomorrow. A number of demonstrations against the exhibition are also expected to congregate at UCC.
