We must have heard already of these phrases ? rolling out the red carpet, red carpet treatment, or even just plain red carpet. No doubt, we have an idea what these phrases meant. We might have even watched events showing the red carpet treatment or catching that moment as the red carpet is rolled. You might even be lucky enough and had walked through a red carpet yourself!

I surely have no red carpet experience to brag about but I just wonder, why red? Why was it used in the first place?

Well, that is what we are about to find out.

Red carpet, in the dictionary, has been defined as a special and official welcome given to an important guest and that it is marked by the laying down of a red floor covering in which the special quest can walk on. In other words ? red carpet, red carpet treatment, rolling out the red carpet ? are ways of showing honor, respect, prestige, and warm welcome to someone.

So how did red carpet come about?

There are several stories as to the origin and first, historic use of the red carpet.

The first, which is the earliest known citation about walking the red carpet, is the play Agamemmon. Agamemmon, returning from a triumphant battle at Troy, was offered by his wife to walk on a red path to his palace. It is believed that red symbolizes blood and honor to the gods.

Second is one that dates back as far as 1902, when the New York Central Railroad laid down red carpet for their passengers as they get their selves in in the train. It?s much like a VIP treatment since the act was exclusively for 20^th Century Limited.

Also, it is good to note that most paintings which were also used as patterns for most carpets from the eastern part of the world, often depict red rugs or carpets laid on the king?s or ruler?s throne.

Then in 1821, United States President James Madison was welcomed with a red carpet laid on the river.

Nowadays, red carpet has also become part of different events like awards night especially in the showbiz industry. It?s also being used now for weddings.? ?How lovely could that be?
